Playing strong, Nguyen Hoang Thien defeated his more experienced opponent Phillip King in only 55 minutes in the first singles match.
The second singles match witnessed the competition between two young players, Ly Hoang Nam from Vietnam and Andrew Li from Hong Kong. Unfortunately, Hoang Nam suffered a 4-6 loss to his rival in the first set.
However, Nam lit up hopes for Vietnam by finishing off Andrew Li 6-3 and 6-2 in the second and third sets, respectively.
With the consecutive victories of two young players in singles matches, the two countries agreed not to play in the doubles match.
The 2-0 victory helped Vietnam earn a spot in Group II next year.
