August 28 – September 3: Vietnam, El Salvador hold first political consultation

1. Vietnam, El Salvador hold first political consultation

The first deputy, foreign minister-level, political consultation between Vietnam and El Salvador took place in Hanoi, on August 28, aiming to seek the measures needed to foster the partnership between the two countries and their foreign ministries.

Co-chairing the event, Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc and his El Salvador counterpart Carlos Castaneda agreed to continue maintaining and enhancing the effectiveness of the consultations between the two ministries. They agreed on the huge cooperation potential between the two countries, especially in the fields of education, transportation, oil and gas, construction materials and agro-fishery production and processing. The two sides also shared their views on many international and regional issues of mutual concern.

2. Vietnam attends FEALAC’s Foreign Ministerial Meeting

Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc, joined by a Vietnamese delegation, attended the eighth Foreign Ministerial Meeting (FMM-8) of the Forum for East Asia – Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC), which took place in Busan, in the Republic of Korea on August 31.

The event, themed “One Vision, New Action”, attracted the participation of 36 member countries from within the two regions.

The participants agreed to establish a key group comprising of six coordinating countries from the two regions and the FEALAC Trust Fund, which will be run by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia (ESCAP) and the Pacific and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

3. Vietnam, Japan hold 5th defence policy dialogue

The 5th Vietnam-Japan defence policy dialogue took place in Nha Trang city, Khanh Hoa province, on August 30, under the co-chair of Deputy Defence Minister Sen. Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh and his Japanese counterpart Manabe Ro.

During the dialogue, both sides discussed a number of regional and global issues of mutual concern and reviewed the outcomes of the implementation of the cooperation agreements reached at the previous event in Tokyo, in November 2016. Both sides expressed their pleasure at their progress in defence cooperation over recent years, as well as the activeness of the relevant Vietnamese and Japanese agencies in deploying the reached agreements.

4. PM hosts banquet for foreign diplomats, friends on National Day

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his wife hosted a banquet for ambassadors and heads of international organisations in Vietnam, along with their spouses, in Hanoi, on August 31, marking the occasion of the 72nd National Day (September 2).

Addressing the event, the PM reviewed the country’s achievements over the past 72 years, highlighting that Vietnam is always a friend and trustworthy partner of countries around the world. He thanked the governments and people of foreign countries, as well as international and regional organisations, and international partners and friends, expressing his hope to receive further support from them in the future.

On behalf of the guests, Venezuelan Ambassador Jorge Rodon Uzcategui, who is also head of the diplomatic corps in Hanoi, congratulated Vietnam on the National Day.

5. Various activities held to mark National Day

Many activities and art programme have been held across the country in the past few days in celebration of the 72nd anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day (September 2).

The Vietnamese Embassy in the Republic of Korea, South Africa, Cambodia and other countries also held ceremonies to celebrate 72 years of Vietnam’s National Day.

6. Vietfish 2017 kicks off in HCM City

The 2017 Vietfish opens at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Centre in Ho Chi Minh City on August 29.

The 2017 Vietnam Fisheries International Exhibition (Vietfish) opened at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Centre in Ho Chi Minh City, on August 29, with the participation of seafood producers and exporters from 15 countries.

The expo, themed “Asia’s Home of Seafood”, features over 350 booths showcasing seafood products, and machinery and equipment for use in aquaculture, from over 200 exhibitors from Vietnam and foreign countries, including, Japan, China, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, and Denmark.

A series of activities also took place on the sidelines of the exhibition, including a cooking show, the launch of new products and an aquaculture seminar.

7. HCMC opens street food areas

Ho Chi Minh City officially launched the first street food zones, on August 28, on the sidewalk of Nguyen Van Chiem street and Bach Tung Diep park, in District No.1.

The areas include a total of 35 food and beverage booths owned by people who were previously vendors in the city.

They will be open to the public from 6:00 – 9:00 am and 11:00-13:00 pm.

8. Vietnam wraps up SEA Games 2017 with 58 gold medals

Vietnam officially concluded their campaign at the 29th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on August 29, settling for third place overall with a collection of 58 gold, 50 silver and 60 bronze medals.

Thailand won an additional title in the men’s 1,000m skating event this morning to successfully defend second place with 72 gold medals. Hosts Malaysia topped the overall medal table, winning a total of 145 gold, 92 silver and 86 bronze medals.

The closing ceremony of the 29th SEA Games is scheduled to take place at around 8.30pm (Vietnamese time) today.

9. Exhibition features nations, peoples in ASEAN Community

More than 300 photos and 60 documentary films featuring the ASEAN countries and people are being showcased at an exhibition that opened in the northern province of Ninh Binh on August 28.

The works were chosen from the final rounds of festivals of photos, reports and documentary films, including those from 2010 on the peoples in ASEAN Community, from 2013 on the environment and climate change in the ASEAN Community, and from 2015 on the ethnic groups within the ASEAN Community, all held by the Ministry of Information and Communications.

The works highlight the beauty of the nations, people and culture of the ASEAN countries, the Community’s efforts in environmental protection and climate change response and the ethnic groups in ASEAN.
