Lao Prime Minister visits Vietnam

Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith paid an official visit to Vietnam from October 1-3 at the invitation of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

PM Sisoulith held talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc, paid a courtesy visit to Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong, and met with National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

The leaders of the two countries discussed directions and measures to strengthen the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos in the coming time.

The two PMs witnessed the signing of eight cooperation agreements in the fields of economy, investment, education, finance, banking, energy and aviation.

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen paid a two-day official visit to Vietnam from October 4-5 at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

During the visit, Hun Sen held talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc, paid a courtesy visit to Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong and met with National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

The two sides agreed to fully tap their potentials to make economic cooperation a pillar in bilateral ties, and to maintain growth momentum through carrying out trade promotion measures, supporting firms of both sides to attend each other’s trade and investment promotion activities, fairs and exhibitions, while expanding partnerships in potential fields such as information and communication technology, aviation, tourism, finance-banking, hi-tech agriculture, aquaculture, and health care.

Vietnam’s industrial growth hits four-year high

The value added for the entire industrial sector in the first nine months of 2019 grew 9.56% compared to the same period last year, which is the highest it has been within the last four years, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

The manufacturing industry continued to record the largest increase in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) at 11.37%, followed by electricity generation and distribution at 10.7%.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 6 for the first smart city project in Hanoi, the largest of its kind nationwide, in the capital’s suburban Dong Anh district, with the participation of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

The project worth nearly US$4.2 billion is invested in by Vietnam’s BRG Group and Japan’s Sumitomo Group, and covers 272 hectares. It is based on the smart urban planning scheme of the Nhat Tan-Noi Bai axis, which is over 11km long, and divided into five phases which are expected to be fully completed by 2028.

The highlight of this project will be a 108-storey financial tower. Investors have the ambition of turning this place into a financial centre of Vietnam and Southeast Asia as a whole.

Vietnam’s Industry 4.0 Summit 2019 opens in Hanoi

The Vietnam’s Industry 4.0 Summit 2019 officially opened in Hanoi on October 3 as part of the activities to realise the Politburo’s Resolution on actively participating in the Fourth Industrial Revolution to accelerate national development.

The summit aims to explain key polices of the Party and State in Vietnam’s participation in the fourth Industrial Revolution, to pool domestic and foreign experts’ recommendations for such engagement, and to connect international investors in the field with the Vietnamese business community.

Vietnam’s first lung transplant patient discharged from hospital

Vietnam’s first lung transplant patient has recovered well and was discharged from the Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi on October 4, after 1.5 months undergoing the first lung transplant in Vietnam, donated from a brain-dead donor.

NVK, 38, was congratulated by doctors of Viet Duc Hospital as the second patient to undergo a lung transplant carried out by Vietnamese medical staff and is the first patient to be discharged from the hospital.

The transplantation took nearly 15 hours to complete, from 4 pm on August 12 to 6:30 am the next day.

Top Vietnamese tennis player beat highest ranked opponent in career

On October 5, Vietnam top tennis star Ly Hoang Nam won an impressive victory against the No. 1 seed, Yan Bai (China), to book his berth in the final of the ITF World Tour M25 - Hai Dang Cup 2019.

In the last semi-final of matchday four at the tournament held in Southern Vietnamese province of Tay Ninh, Nam (world No. 496) met Yan Bai, ranked 224 in ATP rankings. The No. 1 Chinese seed started the match impressively, but could not hold back Nam's advance.

Beating the top seed 2-1 after 2 hours 35 minutes, Hoang Nam progressed to the final of ITF World Tour M25. It is the biggest victory in the career of the 1997 born star as he beat the player ranked 224 in the world.
