Vietnam successfully treats 15 of 16 Covid-19 infection cases

A 73-year-old patient infected with the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was released from a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City on the afternoon of February 21, marking the 15th recovered case from the deadly virus out of the total 16 detected infections in Vietnam.

After 11 days of treatment at the HCM City Hospital of Tropical Diseases, the Vietnamese-American repeatedly tested negative from February 12-17. As reported at a recent meeting of the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control in Hanoi, Vietnam has reported no new confirmed cases of COVID-19 since February 13.

The 30th meeting of the ASEAN Inter-Governmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) took place in Hanoi from February 18-21, under the chair of Ambassador Nguyen Thai Yen Huong, Vietnam’s AICHR representative and Chair of AICHR 2020.

It was the first activity during Vietnam’s tenure in the post in order to review the progress of AICHR’s priority programmes and reports on rights regarding education, environment, women, children and people with disabilities in tandem with priorities in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh attended the fifth Mekong-Langcang Cooperation (MLC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Vientiane, Laos on February 20, during which he emphasised the need to focus resources on vulnerable sectors and those that serve as economic engines of member countries.

On the sideline of the event, Deputy PM Minh had bilateral meetings with Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Lao Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith.

Vinamilk eligible to export milk to China

The China’s General Administration of Customs has officially granted a transaction code to a factory of Vietnam Dairy Products Joint Stock Company (Vinamilk) to export its sweetened condensed milk and other condensed milk to the Chinese market.

Vinamilk has become the second Vietnamese dairy company eligible to export milk products to China after TH Milk Joint Stock Company. TH Milk exported its first batch of pure sterilized fresh milk and sterilized fresh milk added with natural flavours to China in October 2019.

Door opened for Vietnamese fresh lychee exports to Japan

Japan has officially opened the doors for Vietnamese lychee to directly enter this market in the 2020 crop, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF) informed the MARD’s Plant Protection Department of its opening market for Vietnamese “thieu” lychee associated with regulations on plant quarantine in late December 2019. Thus, lychee is the fourth fresh fruit of Vietnam, after dragon fruit, mango, and banana allowed to be imported into the Japanese market - one of the world’s most demanding markets in regards to quality standards and food hygiene and safety.

Vietnamese universities listed among Emerging Economies University Rankings

Three Vietnamese universities have been listed among Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020, which were announced by the Times Higher Education magazine, for the first time.

Specifically, the Vietnam National University (Hanoi) ranked first in Vietnam and 201st-250th in the rankings. Meanwhile, the Hanoi University of Science and Technology was among 251st-300th positions and the Vietnam National University (Ho Chi Minh) stood 401st-500th places.

Khanh Hoa’s Whale island in top 10 must-dive destinations for 2020

Whale Island in the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa has been named among the ten must-dive destinations for 2020 by US magazine Forbes.

The magazine said Whale Island (also called Hon Ong), with an average water temperature that hovers around 28C, is known for its macro gems hidden among the lush soft corals, which makes drift diving here that much more exciting.

Vietnam’s first overseas tourism office opened in UK

The first overseas tourism office of Vietnam was officially opened in London, the UK, on February 18.

Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Le Quang Tung said the UK is a strategic partner and the second largest tourism market of Vietnam in the EU. Therefore, the office opened here will help British people learn more about Vietnam’s tourism. The office, named The Visit Vietnam, is tasked with coordinating with British partners to promote the two countries’ tourism cooperation, he noted.

Vietnamese boxer knocks out Thai challenger to retain WBA Asia title

Vietnamese boxer Truong Dinh Hoang successfully defended his WBA Asia Super Middleweight title following his knock-out (KO) victory against Thai rival Yuttana Wongda in Manila, the Philippines

Despite being considered the underdog, Hoang shocked everyone in attendance as he only needed two rounds (out of the total 12 rounds) to knock out the Thai challenger, thus becoming the first Vietnamese boxer to concurrently hold the WBA Asia and WBA Asia East belts.

Earlier on October 20, 2019, Hoang produced a KO win against Lee Gyu-hyun (Republic of Korea) after 10 rounds in his first professional bout in Hanoi to be crowned the WBA Asia East champion.

F1 Vietnam Grand Prix warms up with model car parade in Hanoi

A parade showcasing a Formula 1 (F1) model car was held in Hanoi on February 22 as part of events to celebrate the F1 Vietnam Grand Prix (GP) 2020, scheduled to kick off on April 5 at the brand-new 5.565 km Hanoi Street Circuit.

The F1 model car, carried by a tractor, was paraded through a number of major streets of Hanoi, starting from Vo Chi Cong Street and reaching its terminal in Lang Ha Street. According to the organising committee, the F1 model car is made of composite material and accurately replicates the actual cars that will be officially used in the race, at a 1:1 ratio.
