Whale Worshipping Festival is the biggest festival of the year in Thanh Khe District. |
It aims to worship the whale — the sea god who is believed to protect fishermen from dangers during their offshore fishing trips. It also conveys people’s wishes for favourable weather conditions and bountiful catches. |
The festival was recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2016 |
This year’s festival took place from February 27 to 29, with a wide range of activities. |
Locals join a fish carrying contest. |
Fishermen take part in a fishing-net-making competition. |
The festival also includes a space introducing photos on Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Paracel) Archipelago. |
Booths were set up at the festival to display typical products of Da Nang City. |
At the event, representatives from Nguoi Lao Dong (The Labourer) Newspaper presented 1,000 national flags and medicine to fishermen in Thanh Khe District. |
Following the opening ceremony, fishing boats were launched to sea to kick off a new catching season. |
