Party and State leaders and local authorities joined teachers and students at a number of schools around the country to celebrate the beginning of the new school year.
* Politburo member, Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC) and head of the CPVCC Commission for Organisation, To Huy Rua, attended the opening of the new school year at Lam Son High School for Gifted Students in the central province of Thanh Hoa on September 5.
Addressing the ceremony, Secretary Rua praised the achievements made by the school’s teachers and students over the past years. He urged the provincial education sector and the school to uphold their fine teaching and learning traditions, continue comprehensively reforming education and training, improve the capacity of teaching staff, and create favourable conditions for ethnic minority students in the province to attain high academic achievements.
* During the school year opening at Nguyen Thuong Hien High School in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday, Politburo member and Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Le Thanh Hai asked the school to focus on improving the quality teaching and learning towards standardisation, modernisation and international integration. He also urged it to promote the ‘Studying and Following President Ho Chi Minh’s Moral Example’ and ‘Building Friendly Schools, Active Students’ campaigns, and strengthen comprehensive education to encourage students’ creativity and innovation.
* The same day, Hanoi Medical University started the new school year on the occasion of its 110th anniversary.
* Nearly 200,000 students in the northern province of Ninh Binh also began the new year yesterday in the 216 new classrooms built by the provincial education sector. It has also constructed 123 function rooms and installed 104 toilets in schools this year, in addition to 9,204 square metres of school yard and fencing.
* The 2012-2013 school year kicked off at 644 schools in Thai Nguyen province, welcoming back more than 233,000 students to their classrooms.
* In Hoa Binh province, 194,412 students and 21,167 teachers and educational officers attended the opening ceremonies for the new academic year at 735 schools. The provincial education sector also provided two million textbooks and teaching aids worth VND20 billion for schools in the province this year.
* As many as 360 new classrooms have been built and 745 others upgraded for this academic year in Hai Phong city at a total cost of VND293 billion, raising the number of national standard schools in the city to 249.
* The Da Nang educational sector invested more than VND20 billion in teaching supplies and equipment for schools in the 2012-2013 academic year.
* Ceremonies to open the new academic year were also organised at schools in Yen Bai, Son La, Bac Ninh, Ha Giang, Nam Dinh, Quang Ninh, Ha Tinh, Phu Yen, and Kon Tum provinces.
