With important significance, marking General Secretary and President To Lam’s first working trip to the United Nations and the United States since Viet Nam successfully held the 14th National Party Congress, the election of deputies to the 16th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term, the working trip conveys the message of a proactive, active and responsible Viet Nam in addressing global issues and joining hands to contribute to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the world.
The working trip also affirms the diplomatic mettle and integration vision of Viet Nam as it confidently enters a new era of development.
It is also vivid evidence of the determination to vigorously and effectively implement the foreign policy set out by the 14th National Party Congress, Resolution No. 06-NQ/TW of the Politburo on implementing the foreign policy of the 14th National Party Congress and Resolution No. 59-NQ/TW of the Politburo on international integration in the new situation, contributing to strengthening relations with the United Nations, the United States as well as other friends and partners.
Against the backdrop of rapid, profound and epochal changes in the world situation, Viet Nam’s active and comprehensive, extensive international integration and cooperation are contributing to mobilising resources, expanding development space and enhancing the country’s capacity to respond to challenges.
The nearly 50-year journey since Viet Nam officially became a member of the United Nations in 1977 has been a proud one, marked by Viet Nam’s substantive, active and responsible contributions to common affairs.
Viet Nam has effectively undertaken many important responsibilities, receiving recognition and appreciation from the international community, such as serving as President of the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons; serving as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2014-2016, 2023-2025 and 2026-2028 terms; and serving as a member of the International Law Commission for the 2017-2022 and 2023-2027 terms.
In particular, for the first time, Viet Nam has a representative serving as a Judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) for the 2026-2035 term.
The proactive participation in leading and shaping initiatives of global stature; and active contributions to peacekeeping, the protection of human rights, humanitarian relief and sustainable development… are firm affirmations of Viet Nam’s increasingly high standing in multilateral diplomacy on the international stage.
The activities of General Secretary and President To Lam and the high-level Vietnamese delegation at the High-level General Debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly are expected to strongly convey the message that Viet Nam always respects international law and the United Nations Charter and resolves disputes through peaceful means.
Viet Nam has affirmed the pivotal role of the United Nations in maintaining peace and security, promoting sustainable development and protecting the common values of humanity; while also pledging to continue making active, substantive and effective contributions to the common efforts of the United Nations and the international community.
This is also an opportunity for General Secretary and President To Lam to share with leaders of other countries the successful lessons from Viet Nam’s 40 years of Doi Moi, while contributing initiatives to help address the common challenges facing humanity.
The message of a Viet Nam with a new stature and position, joining hands with international friends to build peace, stability and development, will be conveyed prominently.
Meanwhile, General Secretary and President To Lam’s bilateral activities in the United States will contribute to promoting the Viet Nam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership towards stable, substantive, effective and sustainable development.
In more than 30 years since Viet Nam and the United States established diplomatic relations in 1995, bilateral relations have taken firm, profound and substantive strides, in line with the aspirations and interests of the two countries.
Thanks to the persistent nurturing efforts of successive generations of leaders and peoples of the two countries, Viet Nam-US relations have become a model of efforts to heal wounds, leave the past behind and look towards the future in international relations.
The US side has consistently demonstrated its regard for relations with Viet Nam and the role of General Secretary and President To Lam.
In economic and trade terms, the US is currently Viet Nam’s largest export market. Conversely, for the US, Viet Nam is the eighth-largest trading partner in the world and its largest trading partner in ASEAN.
Security and defence cooperation has achieved many positive results, with cooperation in overcoming the consequences of war being a highlight. The two sides have expanded cooperation in high-tech fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), nuclear energy and high-quality human resource training…
General Secretary and President To Lam’s bilateral activities in the United States, including meetings with the host country’s senior leaders, will contribute to promoting support for Viet Nam and bilateral relations among various circles.
Through these activities, the role of head-of-state diplomacy will be brought into full play, attracting additional resources to serve the country’s development.
The working trip also conveys the message that the Party and State care for and support the Vietnamese community overseas, consistently implement the policy of great national unity, mobilise resources both at home and abroad, particularly intellectual resources, to serve development goals in the new period; and implement Resolution No. 23-NQ/TW of the Politburo on work concerning Vietnamese people overseas.
General Secretary and President To Lam’s attendance at the High-level General Debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and bilateral activities in the United States, together with the high-level Vietnamese delegation, consistently demonstrate Viet Nam’s foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation and development, and multilateralisation and diversification of foreign relations.
The working trip will not only contribute to further strengthening the good relations between Viet Nam and the United Nations and the United States, but also highlight the image of a Viet Nam undergoing strong transformation and confidently entering a new era of development.
