PM Phuc attends second Belt and Road Forum

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc led a high-ranking delegation from Vietnam to attend the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing, China, from April 25 to 27.

During his trip to China, PM Phuc met with General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and President of China Xi Jinping.

He also delivered his speech at the roundtable meeting of the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.

On the sidelines of the event, PM Phuc had meetings with leaders of other nations, as well as meeting leaders of Chinese major enterprises and international institutions.

Former President Le Duc Anh passes away

Former President, General Le Duc Anh passed away in his home on Hoang Dieu street, Hanoi, at 20:10 on April 22, due to serious illness and old age.

The Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, the National Assembly, the President, the Government and the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee have issued a special communiqué, announcing that his funeral will be held as a national mourning.

Comrade Le Duc Anh was born on December 1, 1920, in Loc An commune, Phu Loc district, the central province of Thua Thien - Hue. He started participating in revolutionary activities in 1937 and joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in May 1938. Over the more than 80 years of his revolutionary activities, comrade Le Duc Anh made great contributions to the glorious revolution cause of the Party and the nation.

During the two-day national mourning on May 3-4, national flags will be flown at half-mast at offices and public places, and recreational and entertainment activities will be suspended.

Major solar power complex inaugurated in Ninh Thuan

A solar power complex with a total capacity of 330MWp, the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia, was inaugurated at a ceremony held on April 27 by Vietnamese BIM Group in Phuoc Minh commune, Thuan Nam district, Ninh Thuan province.

The complex features three plants, with respective capacities of 30MWp, 250MWp and 50MWp, and will be connected to national electric network this month.

Under the VND7 trillion (US$301.3 million) project, more than 1 million solar panels were installed at the plants, together with other advanced technologies, expecting to contribute 600 million kWh to the national grid and benefit 200,000 households yearly.

Hue Traditional Craft Festival 2019 opens

The Hue Traditional Craft Festival 2019, the 8th edition, opened in the former imperial capital of Hue on April 26.

Spanning from April 26 to May 5, the event introduces 60 craft villages and more than 350 artisans, not only from Thua Thien-Hue but also other cities and provinces such as Ha Giang, Hoa Binh, Hanoi, Ha Nam, Hung Yen, Thai Binh in the north, Ninh Thuan in the south central region, Lam Dong in the Central Highlands and Dong Thap in the south.

The festival is also being attended by 70 foreign artisans from eight cities that have twin-city and cooperative relationships with Hue, namely Takayama, Sasayama, and Saijo of Japan; Gyeongju, Namyangiu, and Dongnae of the Republic of Korea (RoK); Konya of Turkey; and Sao Luix of Brazil.

During the course of the festival, various programmes will be held, such as exhibitions and demonstrations of traditional products of domestic and foreign traditional crafts; the rite to commemorate the patrons of all crafts; a procession honouring artisans and craft villages; along with many side activities, including a balloon festival, an Ao Dai event and a special performance by famous RoK artists.

Finance sector continues leading e-Government development in 2018

The Ministry of Finance led the way in e-Government development in 2018, according to a report on Vietnam’s e-Government development announced on April 25.

The report featured evaluations and rankings in the three categories of ministries and ministerial-level agencies, governmental agencies, and centrally-run cities and provinces.

FDI pledges to Vietnam hit US$14.59 billion in first four months

The Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry of Planning and Investment announced on April 26 that pledges of FDI in Vietnam reached US$14.59 billion in the first four months of 2019, the highest figure in the past four years.

That’s up 81% compared with the same period of 2018. Disbursement during the period only increased by 7.5% to reach US$5.7billion.

Miss World Vietnam 2019 kicks off

Do My Linh (R), Miss Vietnam 2016, and Tran Tieu Vy (L), Miss Vietnam 2018, named as ambassadors for the Miss World Vietnam pageant.

The Miss World Vietnam beauty pageant officially kicked off on April 22. The competition aims to select a contestant to represent Vietnam at the Miss World pageant, which will take place in Thailand in November.

Ha Kieu Anh, Miss Vietnam 1992, was also selected as a judge whilst Do My Linh, Miss Vietnam 2016, and Tran Tieu Vy, Miss Vietnam 2018, were named as ambassadors for the Miss World Vietnam pageant.

The southern region’s final round is scheduled to be held in Nha Trang while the northern region’s final round will take place in Ha Long Bay, in northern Quang Ninh province, and Hanoi. The pageant’s final round is scheduled to be organised in August in the central city of Da Nang.

Vietnam’s top cueist beats world prodigy to claim Asian three-cushion carom title

Vietnam’s “billiards king” Tran Quyet Chien came from behind to narrowly beat world billiards prodigy Cho Myung-woo from the RoK 40-38 in the three-cushion carom final on April 25.This ensured Vietnam’s absolute dominance at the 10th Asian Carom Billiards Championship 2019 in Ho Chi Minh City.

As the overall champion, Quyet Chien pocketed US$4,000 in prize money and 80 bonus points in the world rankings, which will possibly lift him to the world’s top three in the upcoming UMB table.

Earlier, Chien’s compatriot Ma Minh Cam took the one-cushion carom title after defeating his RoK opponent, Seo Hyun-min, in the final on the evening of April 23.
