Long Thanh Airport to introduce paperless passenger journey

On October 23, Airports Corporation of Viet Nam (ACV), the investor in Component Project 3 of the Long Thanh Airport project, announced that the airport would adopt a “paperless journey” model from its very first day of operation, fully integrating it with the VNeID electronic identification system and the national population database.

Specifically, Long Thanh Airport will apply biometric technology (facial recognition). Under a journey featuring three automated touchpoints, passengers will have their identities verified using chip-enabled citizen identity cards and facial recognition cameras at three key checkpoints: check-in counters, security screening areas and boarding gates.

In addition, the airport terminal will be equipped with an automatic gate (auto-gate) system, featuring 12 fully automated security screening lanes using biometric technology. The process of scanning faces (or irises) to match data takes just a few seconds, completely eliminating the need for passengers to present their tickets and documents manually on multiple occasions.

For baggage handling, Long Thanh Airport is being equipped with a high-speed automated baggage handling system (BHS). The airport's BHS is on a massive scale, with conveyor belts extending a total of 24 km, and is designed to connect directly with the smart terminal infrastructure.

Unlike conventional conveyor belts, Long Thanh Airport uses advanced ICS technology. Each item of baggage is placed on an independently operating tray fitted with a tracking chip. This technology enables baggage to move at very high speeds with highly precise routing, eliminating friction and minimising the risk of jams, tears or lost baggage.

The system incorporates 28 state-of-the-art CT screening machines, together with 28 sorting units. CT scanners provide detailed 3D cross-sectional images of the inside of baggage, automatically detecting explosives or prohibited items at high speed without requiring passengers to remove belongings from their suitcases.

The high-speed automated baggage handling system, combined with biometric technology, allows passengers to weigh their baggage, print and attach baggage tags, and feed their bags into the system themselves without requiring assistance from counter staff.

Long Thanh Airport is being built on an area of 5,000 hectares in Long Thanh Ward, Dong Nai City. The project has an estimated total investment of more than 16 billion USD and is divided into three phases. Phase 1 accounts for more than 5.4 billion USD, with a capacity of 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo per year.

Nearly six years after construction began, Long Thanh Airport is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Once all phases are complete, Long Thanh Airport will have an annual capacity of 100 million passengers and 5 million tonnes of cargo, with the aim of becoming one of Southeast Asia's leading aviation transit hubs.
