According to the Australian Government, Viet Nam is currently one of Australia’s fastest-growing economic partners and a strategic destination for Australian businesses seeking cooperation opportunities in areas such as education, skills training, agriculture, food, infrastructure, green energy transition, and resources.

In her capacity as Business Champion, O’Neal will work with Government agencies and private-sector partners from both countries to promote the capabilities of Australian businesses, strengthen trade and investment ties, and support the implementation of Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040.

O’Neal currently serves as RMIT University Chancellor and has extensive experience in business, legal affairs, and community activities. In her new role, she succeeds Louise Adams, who is credited with making significant contributions to strengthening the confidence of Australian investors and promoting bilateral trade relations in recent years.

The appointment also reflects RMIT University’s connecting role in Viet Nam.

Australian Ambassador to Viet Nam Gillian Bird welcomed the appointment of O’Neal, saying that Viet Nam is a priority partner for Australia, and business cooperation plays a central role in deepening the economic relationship between the two countries.

According to Ambassador Gillian Bird, O’Neal possesses extensive business experience and a broad network of connections in Viet Nam, enabling her to effectively support Australian investors and promote high-quality and sustainable investment projects.

Speaking after her appointment, Peggy O’Neal said she felt honoured to take on the new role. “Since joining RMIT University as Chancellor in 2022, it has been a genuine privilege to spend time in-country getting to know the people of Viet Nam and to see first-hand the potential of the Australia and Viet Nam relationship,” she said.

O’Neal also expressed her desire to continue contributing to the promotion of effective cooperation between the two countries towards shared regional development and prosperity.
