Ceremony sees off women’s football team to 2023 FIFA World Cup finals

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) held a ceremony in Hanoi on July 4 to see off the Vietnamese women’s football team to the 2023 FIFA World Cup finals, scheduled to take place in New Zealand and Australia from July 20 to August 20.

Speaking at the ceremony, VFF President Tran Quoc Tuan recalled the successes of the national Futsal and U20 football teams at the 2021 FIFA Futsal World Cup and 2022 FIFA U-20 World Cup respectively, adding that the ticket to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup achieved by the Vietnamese women’s football team is another historical milestone for Vietnamese football in general and women's football in particular.

At the ceremony, businesses provided sponsorship of 1 billion VND to the squad to acknowledge their ceaseless efforts and remarkable achievements and contributions to the development of Vietnamese sport.

For his part, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong stressed that the team will leave for the tournament with the strong support of people across the entire country.

He expressed his belief that although the team will face strong opponents at the tournament, they team will gain success.

Earlier, a gala reception was held to bid farewell to the team on July 2. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also met and presented gifts to the team members on July 3.

The 23-strong squad will depart for New Zealand to compete in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup finals on July 5. In the group stage, they will face the US, Portugal, and the Netherlands.
