Construction of the tunnel was carried out under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) and Build-Transfer (BT) models with a total investment of VND784 billion (over US$34.85 million).
The tunnel through Co Ma pass, situated on the National Highway 1A section of Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa province, consists of two parallel tubular tunnels, each measuring 500 metres in length and 9.75 metres in width.
The approaching road on either side consists of two lanes and permits a maximum speed of up to 80 kilometres per hour.
The tunnel was also equipped with modern facilities including lighting, ventilation as well as fire protection and detection systems.
The operation of Co Ma tunnel is expected to contribute to ensuring traffic safety in all weather conditions for vehicles on Highway 1 as well as modernising the major transportation network of the central region.
The construction of the tunnel through Cu Mong mountain pass, with a total investment of VND3.921 trillion (over US$174.3 million), also began on the same day.
The project, connecting Binh Dinh and Phu Yen provinces, has a total length of 6.62 kilometres, including the 2.6 kilometre approaching road. The Cu Mong tunnel will also include two parallel sides consisting of two lanes each.
Once completed, it is expected to reduce traffic accidents and ensure convenience in transportation on Highway 1 as well as contribute to boosting the socio-economic development of Binh Dinh and Phu Yen provinces and surrounding areas.
