Colombia stun Germany 2-0 in latest setback for Euro 2024 hosts

Germany suffered a 2-0 home loss to Colombia in a friendly on Tuesday (June 20) in their latest setback less than a year before they host Euro 2024.

Luis Diaz's 54th-minute header and Juan Cuadrado's penalty in the 82nd gave the visitors their first victory over the Germans, who were booed at the end. Germany, who have less than a year to build a battle-hardened team for the continental tournament, had needed two late goals to draw 3-3 with Ukraine last week before Friday's 1-0 loss to Poland.

* Norway's Erling Haaland scored twice in the second half as they cruised to a 3-1 win over Cyprus on Tuesday to get their Euro 2024 Group A campaign back on track after a shock 2-1 home defeat to Scotland in their previous game. The win lifts the Norwegians to third in the five-team group on four points from four matches, behind second-placed Georgia on goal difference while Scotland top the group with nine points from three games.

* Scotland moved a step closer to booking their spot at Euro 2024 as they maintained their perfect record in qualifying with a 2-0 win over Georgia on Tuesday in a match suspended for an hour and 40 minutes due to torrential rain. Scotland have 12 points after four straight wins in Group A and will next play Cyprus on Sept. 8. Second-placed Georgia, who have four points, will next face Spain.

* Carlos Alcaraz secured a hard-fought 4-6 7-5 7-6(3) win over Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech on his Queen's Club debut on Tuesday, bouncing back from a disappointing French Open. The Spaniard, who will be one of the main contenders at the Queen's grasscourt tournament and Wimbledon next month, survived a wobble in the third set and then won the tiebreak.

* Guinea became the latest side to seal their place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast when they qualified without kicking a ball on Tuesday as Malawi were held to a 0-0 draw by Ethiopia. The result in neutral Maputo means Guinea cannot be overhauled in second place in qualification Group D when the final round of matches are played in September.

* Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min has shut down rumours that he could follow some of Europe's top players to Saudi Arabia anytime soon, adding that money is not his concern at the moment. Al-Ittihad are keen to sign the South Korea forward for around £50 million (US$63.62 million) and are preparing to offer Son a long-term deal worth 25 million pounds per year, British media have reported.

* Prince William made a surprise visit to England's Lionesses on Tuesday to wish them good luck in their Women's World Cup campaign which kicks off next month. The Prince of Wales, who is the FA president, had lunch with the team and staff at the St George's Park national football centre after their opening training session before posing for photos.

* The Qatar FA has said Yusuf Abdurisag did not use discriminatory language against a player from the New Zealand team, who abandoned their friendly at halftime on Monday in protest at an alleged racist slur. Qatar's soccer governing body said on Tuesday that Abdurisag had an exchange of words "in the heat of the moment" where he was the victim of racial slurs.

* N'Golo Kante will leave Chelsea after seven years at Stamford Bridge and join Al-Ittihad as a free agent on a three-year contract, the Saudi club said on Tuesday. The France international, who joined the west London outfit from Leicester City in 2016, will team up with compatriot and Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema at Al-Ittihad.

* Sadio Mane scored twice to help Senegal fight back and shock Brazil 4-2 in a friendly in Lisbon on Tuesday, the five-times world champions' third loss in their last four matches. It was the first time Brazil had lost by two goals since they were beaten 2-0 by Chile in 2015, while they had not conceded four or more in a match since they were humiliated 7-1 by Germany in the 2014 World Cup semi-finals.

* Austria midfielder Christoph Baumgartner scored two late goals to give his side a comfortable 2-0 home win over a stubborn but toothless Sweden in their Euro 2024 Group F qualifier on Tuesday. The win puts the Austrians top of the group on 10 points after four games, three ahead of Belgium who have played a game fewer, with Sweden third on three points.

* Stand-in captain Romelu Lukaku scored twice in three minutes and Johan Bakayoko netted his first international goal as Belgium ended a tumultuous few days with a 3-0 victory over Estonia in their Euro 2024 Group F qualifier on Tuesday. Austria lead the pool with 10 points from four games, with Belgium in second place on seven points from three matches. Estonia have a single point from their three fixtures.

* Australia beat England by two wickets in a thrilling climax to the opening test of the five-match Ashes series on Tuesday. The visitors, set a 281 victory target, began a rain-delayed fifth day on 107 for three but their chances looked remote when they slumped to 227-8. But captain Pat Cummins struck 44 not out in a superb partnership with Nathan Lyon to see Australia over the line in a climax of suffocating tension.

* Former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure was named assistant manager at Belgian Pro League side Standard Liege on Tuesday, the club said. The 40-year-old, who earned more than 100 caps for the Ivory Coast during his playing career, is the final addition to the team of coach Carl Hoefkens, who was appointed on Friday.

* Players at the Nations League and Euro under-21 finals have completed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) courses that can help save lives, UEFA said on Tuesday. Following the success of the first CPR training session held at the Women's Finalissima earlier this year, UEFA and the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) continued the programme at the Nations League finals in the Netherlands.

* Eugene Amo-Dadzie calls himself the world's fastest accountant and the number-crunching British athlete put his money where his mouth is by scorching the track in Graz, Austria with a superb 9.93 seconds finish in the 100 metre run. The 30-year-old full-time accountant, who only started running seriously four years ago, improved on his personal best at the Horst Mandl Memorial last week to become the quickest 100m runner in Europe this year.

* The 2023 Giro d'Italia winner Primoz Roglic will take a brief break from racing after celebrating his recent victory and will not ride Tour de France this year, he said. Roglic became the first Slovenian winner of the Giro d'Italia in May and decided to enjoy the win by briefly stepping off the bike.

* Chelsea have signed French forward Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig on a six-year contract, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday. The 25-year-old, who had 23 goals and nine assists in 36 appearances for the Bundesliga side this past season, has been capped 10 times for France and will be Chelsea's first signing under new manager Mauricio Pochettino.

* Estonian Anett Kontaveit, who reached a career high of No 2 in the world last year, said she is retiring at the age of 27 due to a degenerative back injury and will play her final tournament at Wimbledon next month. Kontaveit cut her 2022 season short in October and took another two-month break in February to focus on the issue.
