Djokovic survives Tsitsipas challenge to set up Nadal final

World number one Novak Djokovic defended resolutely to outlast big-hitting Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3 6-2 5-7 4-6 6-1 in an enthralling contest on Friday to advance to the final of the French Open.

In the title match, the Serb will meet 12-time French Open champion and no. 2 seed Rafael Nadal, who reached his 13th French Open final with a 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (7/0) win over Argentina's Diego Schwartzman.

* Football clubs spent nearly US$1.9 billion less on international player transfers during the European summer trading window compared to last year, according to FIFA research published on Friday (Oct 9).

* The Premier League has agreed to a deal with domestic television broadcasters for games outside of those in the normal broadcast slots to be shown via pay-per-view.

* Striker Sean Maguire and winger Daryl Horgan have been called up to the Ireland squad ahead of their UEFA Nations League matches against Wales and Finland, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) said on Friday.

* Former FIFA Council member Kwesi Nyantakyi had his life ban for financial corruption cut to 15 years on appeal, the Court of Arbitration for Sport said Friday (Oct 9). A FIFA-imposed fine of 500,000 Swiss francs (US$548,000) was also cut to 100,000 Swiss francs (US$110,000), the court said in a statement. The judging panel’s detailed verdict was not published.

* Next year's Tokyo marathon has been rescheduled from March to until after the delayed Olympics due to the ongoing concerns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, organisers said on Friday. The race was originally scheduled to take place on March 7 and was expected to allow around 38,000 runners to participate.

* Mercedes will not supply engines to Red Bull and AlphaTauri once Honda pull out of Formula One at the end of next year, motorsport head Toto Wolff said on Friday. The Austrian, also principal and part-owner of the Mercedes F1 team, told reporters at the Eifel Grand Prix that there was no spare capacity.

* A further three Inter Milan players have tested for COVID-19, the Italian Serie A club said on Friday, taking the total to five this week. Inter, last season's Serie A runners-up, said in a statement that midfielders Roberto Gagliardini and Radja Nainggolan and reserve goalkeeper Ionut Radu had all returned positive tests.

* The novel coronavirus crisis pushed Italian top-flight soccer club AC Milan further into the red in the financial year through June, resulting in a record 195 million euro (US$230 million) loss for the outfit owned by US investment fund Elliott.

* Rally Monza, based at the Italian Grand Prix circuit outside Milan, has been added to the world rally championship calendar as the final round of a COVID-19 hit season, organisers said on Friday. The Dec. 4-6 short format asphalt event, with some 220km of special stages involving the high-speed circuit and roads in the surrounding countryside, will stretch the championship to eight rounds.

* Everton's Carlo Ancelotti was named the Premier League Manager of the Month for September, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin made it a clean sweep for the club as the in-form striker won the Player of the Month prize on Friday (Oct 9). Ancelotti is the first Everton boss to win the award since David Moyes in 2013.

* Colombia scored three goals in a superb first half to beat Venezuela 3-0 and get their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign off to an impressive start at home in Barranquilla.

* The current season of the Singapore Premier League (SPL) will resume on Oct 17 after an almost seven-month absence, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) announced on Friday (Oct 9). Spectators will not be allowed. Instead, fans can watch the matches on livestreams and selected broadcast channels, said MCCY.
