Statistics show that around 60 million coconuts still remain in stock in the southern province of Ben Tre, the largest coconut producing area in Vietnam.
In the first half of 2012, Ben Tre shipped 26.5 million coconuts worth a total of US$21.2 million, down 51.3% compared to the same period last year.
In early 2012, a dozen of coconuts were priced at VND60,000 (US$2.88) but the price has seen a continuous decline since then. Currently, a dozen are sold for VND15,000 – 20,000 (US$0.72 – 0.96).
The primary reason for such a decrease in coconut prices is falling demand for coconut and coconut-derived products on the world market.
