Ferrari and Mercedes neck-and-neck as F1 testing ends

Sebastian Vettel wrapped up Formula One's pre-season testing with the fastest lap for Ferrari on Friday but five-times world champion Lewis Hamilton kept Mercedes on the pace despite suggesting his rival had a half second advantage.

* Inter Milan lost 2-1 to Cagliari on Friday (Mar 1) to stay third in Italy's Serie A in a blow to their bid for a Champions League spot. Inter are on 47 points, two points ahead of fourth-placed AC Milan and three clear of fifth-placed AS Roma who both have a game in hand.

* Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund slumped to a shock 2-1 loss at Augsburg on Friday as forward Ji Dong-won scored twice to give champions Bayern Munich the chance to draw level at the top.

* Filippo Ganna continued his dominance of the individual pursuit as the Italian produced a stunning performance to take gold at the world track championships on Friday. He posted a stunning four minutes 07.456 seconds in morning qualifying - the fastest ever recorded at sea level - and almost matched it in the final with 4:07.992 to overwhelm Germany's Domenic Weinstein.

* Frenchman Quentin Lafargue won his first world title when he took the one kilometre time trial on Friday (Mar 1) in Pruszkow. Lafargue completed the 1000 metres from a standing start in 1min 0.029sec at an average speed of 59.971 kph at the track World Championships.

* Host nation Britain enjoyed a golden start to the European Indoor Athletics Championships on Friday as Laura Muir successfully defended her 3,000 metres title and Katarina Johnson-Thompson completed a dominant victory in the pentathlon.

* Latvia has appointed former Slovenia boss Slavisa Stojanovic as its new head coach three weeks before the start of their European Championship qualifying campaign, the Latvian Football Federation (LFF) said on Friday.

* Former Papua New Guinea Football Association president David Chung has been banned from all soccer-related activities for six-and-a-half years for offering and accepting gifts as well as conflict of interest, world soccer governing body FIFA said on Friday. Along with the ban, which comes into immediate effect, former FIFA vice president Chung was also fined 100,000 Swiss francs (75,597.98 pounds).

* FIFA suggested on Friday (Mar 1) that it will open up a bidding process to find financial backers for two new proposed international tournaments in an apparent change to president Gianni Infantino's strategy.

* La Liga's Monday night games, which have provoked long-running mass protests from supporters, will be discontinued from next season, Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales announced on Friday.

* A focussed Nick Kyrgios overcame a hand injury, leg cramps and a strong performance from Stan Wawrinka to prevail 7-5 6-7(3) 6-4 and advance to the semi-finals of the Acapulco International on Thursday.
