First track and field silver for Vietnam at Asian Games

Nhan Dan - Truong Thanh Hang's excellent performance on November 23 helped her secure a silver medal in the women's 1,500m run, the first silver medal a Vietnamese athlete has ever won in track and field at the Asian Games.

During the 1,500m event, Truong Thanh Hang retained her third position in the leading group and only began to sprint in the a last few metres. She finished with a time of 4 minutes, 9.58 seconds to take second place and beat the Southeast Asian record of 4 minutes and 11.60 seconds which she set three years ago.

The women's 1,500m final included 11 leading regional athletes such as Bahrain's world star, Maryam Yusuf, who grabbed the gold medal in 4 minutes and 8.22 seconds.

The bronze medal went to another athlete from Bahrain, Mimi Belete, with a time of 4 minutes and 10.42 seconds.

Together with Vu Thi Huong's bronze medal in the 100m event on November 22, Truong Thanh Hang's silver established a new position for Vietnamese track and field in the continental arena.

Vietnam has won 12 silver and 12 bronze medals after 10 days of competition, ranking 26th in the medal tally.
