Ha Thanh was convincing in her victory, scoring a total of 53.650 points and creating an amazing 1.800 point lead over the closest runner-up, Abdul Hadi Farah Ann of Malaysia.
It was the second gold medal of the day won by the Vietnam gymnastics team, following the first one secured by Dinh Phuong Thanh in the men’s individual all-around discipline.
Phuong Thanh scored a total of 86.150 points, dominating almost every event (14.600 on floor, 14.100 on pommel horse, 14.500 on vault, 15.800 on parallel bars and 13.800 on horizontal bar) except for the rings where he finished second with 13.350 points.
His Vietnamese teammate Pham Phuoc Hung settled for the silver medal with 85.250 points in total, while Gan Gabriel of Singapore took the bronze with 79.350 points.
The wushu team picked up their second gold medal in this year’s Games thanks to Tran Xuan Hiep’s brilliance in the men’s optional broadsword event on Monday. Hiep was given the top score of 9.72, 0.01 points ahead of Indonesia’s Hulaefi Achmad and 0.02 more than his Vietnamese teammate Nguyen Manh Quyen.
Vietnam also won an additional eight bronze medals today in petanque (1), canoeing (2), diving (1), boxing (2), table tennis (1) and judo (1).
As of 5pm today, Vietnam maintained second place in the SEA Games medal standings with 24 golds, nine silvers and 29 bronzes. Singapore and Thailand made up the remainder of the top three spots with 31 and 23 gold medals respectively.
