Marksman Nguyen Quoc Cuong became the first Vietnamese athlete to win a medal at the largest sporting event on the continent, with the bronze medal won at Asiad 1982. Meanwhile, in the 1994 event in Hiroshima, Japan, taekwondo martial artist Tran Quang Ha made history for the country's sport as he became the first Vietnamese athlete to win a gold medal at the quadrennial Games.

Since 1982 until now, Vietnamese athletes have only missed a single Asiad in 1986. In the last event in Incheon, the Republic of Korea (2014), the Vietnamese delegation won a total of 36 medals, including a gold won by wushu martial artist Duong Thuy Vi, in addition to 10 silver and 26 bronze medals.

Vietnam aims to win three to five gold medals at the on-going Asiad 2018 in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia.
