With this victory, Liem (Elo 2693) temporarily stands in fourth place in the competition with one point, 1.5 points behind the Ukrainian leader Vasily Ivanchuk (Elo 2769).
Earlier in the tournament, Liem suffered two consecutive losses to US rival Gata Kamsky (Elo 2741) in the opener and Ukraine’s Vassily Ivanchuk in his second match.
Liem will take on Slovenia’s Anna Muzychuk (Elo 2606) in his fourth game tomorrow.
The event, which is taking place in Amsterdam from July 12 to 22, features seven Grandmasters, including Le Quang Liem (Vietnam), Vasily Ivanchuk (Ukraine), Gata Kamsky (USA), Baadur Jobava (Georgia), Krisnan Sasikiran (India), Anna Muzychuk (Slovenia) and Emil Sutovsky (Israel).
