This is the first multilateral diplomatic engagement by Party General Secretary and President To Lam at a global forum of leading importance, marking one year since Vietnam and the US established a comprehensive strategic partnership and towards the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.

The Summit of the Future and the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 79) take place in the context of the world situation continuing to develop complicatedly.

Peace and cooperation are the dominant trends, but strategic competition between major powers is increasingly fierce, having a profound impact on global security, economy and trade, posing great challenges to multilateralism and the United Nations in particular.

Hotspots, geopolitical tensions and non-traditional security issues, such as climate change, energy security, food security, epidemics, continue to have negative impacts on global development and the progress of countries in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The greater the challenge, the more international cooperation is needed.

In that context, the United Nations Summit of the Future, themed “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Future,” will take place from September 22 to 23. The High-level General Debate of the 79th session of the General Assembly, under the theme, "Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations”, will also take place from September 24 to 28.

The events aim to unify solutions to current urgent global challenges and issues.

Since Vietnam joined the UN on September 20, 1977, the relationship between Vietnam and the UN has been constantly consolidated and strengthened, increasingly deepening. The UN has accompanied Vietnam from the national reconstruction post-war recovery to breaking the embargo and international integration.

During the recent COVID-19 pandemic response period, the UN promptly supported Vietnam in terms of policy advice, medical supplies and equipment, and vaccines, helping Vietnam control the epidemic and recover the economy soon.

Over the past 50 years, Vietnam has participated more proactively and actively and made substantial and extensive contributions in all areas of the United Nations pillar activities on peacekeeping, security and development cooperation.

Thanks to its contributions, the country has been elected to many UN agencies in important positions, such as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. The country was also elected to the International Law Commission (ILC), the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), and the Vice President of the UN General Assembly's 77th session.

Vietnam has also made many important contributions to regional and global cooperation.

In the nearly 30 years since Vietnam and the US established diplomatic relations, the cooperation between the two countries has developed strongly. After a year of upgrading to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the two sides continue to actively implement the agreement between the two countries' senior leaders and the Joint Statement on upgrading Vietnam-US relations (2023).

The two sides focus on economics, trade and investment, considering science, technology and innovation as breakthrough areas of cooperation, promoting cooperation in responding to climate change, education and training, with a focus on training high-quality human resources.

With the strong development of the Vietnam-United Nations relationship, General Secretary and President To Lam led the Vietnamese high-ranking delegation to attend the UN Summit of the Future, the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, continuing to demonstrate Vietnam's active, proactive participation and responsible contributions to the international community. At the same time, it contributes to affirming and enhancing the country's position, conveying the message of strengthening multilateralism, working together to create a peaceful, stable, prosperous and sustainable future for all people around the world, further deepening and effectively promoting cooperation between Vietnam and the UN and international partners and friends.

Continuing to implement the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and towards the 30th anniversary of Vietnam-US diplomatic relations, the trip of General Secretary and President To Lam affirmed Vietnam's policy and long-term vision of developing relations with the US.

The meetings and contacts of General Secretary and President To Lam in the US will contribute to concretising the commitments between the two countries' senior leaders and promoting cooperation between the two countries, especially in the fields of economics, trade, investment and science and technology.

Wishing the trip of General Secretary, President To Lam and his spouse, along with the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to attend the United Nations Summit of the Future and the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 79) and work in the United States a great success, contributing to further strengthening the relationship between Vietnam and the UN, the US and conveying the message that Vietnam is an active and trustworthy partner, contributing responsibly and effectively to the common work of the international community for a common future of peace, stability, prosperity and sustainability.
