The participants come from 11 artistic units across the country including the Vietnam National Tuong Theatre, Dao Tan Tuong Theatre, Quang Nam Opera Company, and Hue Opera Theatre, as well as the Thanh Hoa provincial Tuong Art Troupe and the Centre for Conversation and the Promotion of Nghe Folk Heritage.

The play ‘Duong dua trong bong toi’ (Race-track in the Dark) was performed by the Centre for Conversation and Promotion of Nghe Folk Heritage at the opening ceremony and nine other Tuong plays, as well as six folk operas, will be staged during the competition.

The competition, which is co-organised by the Department of Performing Arts, Vietnam Stage Artists’ Association and Quang Nam provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, aims to evaluate the artistic quality of professional Tuong and Folk Opera groups to develop appropriate orientations for the future.

It is also an opportunity to introduce audiences to these traditional art forms and foster young acting talent.

Awards for the competition will be presented at a ceremony on May 26.
