National Tuong and folk opera competition wraps up

Nhan Dan Online – Winners of the 2013 National Professional Tuong (classical drama) and Folk Opera Competition were honoured at the closing ceremony held on May 26 in the central province of Quang Nam.

Two golden prizes, each worth VND30 million, went to folk operas entitled ‘Khuc ca bi trang’ (A Woeful and Majestic Song) performed by the Binh Dinh Bai Choi (singing while playing cards) Group and ‘Duong dua trong bong toi’ (Race-track in the Dark) by the Centre for Conversation and Promotion of Nghe Folk Heritage.

Three silver prizes each worth VND20 million were awarded to plays ‘Nguyen Tri Phuong’, ‘Hoang Dieu’ and ‘Noi niem dang Quan Vuong’ (Monarch’s Innermost Feelings) by the Vietnam Tuong Theatre, Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theatre and the Royal Hue Traditional Arts Theatre, respectively.
The organising board of the competition also presented 23 gold and 42 silver medals to outstanding actors as well as gave awards to the best author, director, painter and musician.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Vuong Duy Bien said that the competition provides an opportunity to evaluate the artistic quality of professional Tuong and Folk Opera groups around the country as well as discover and foster young acting talent.

The eight-day event attracted nearly 700 actors from 11 artistic units across the country and featured nine Tuong plays and six folk operas.
