Brazilian Rodrygo scored the opener after two minutes but Carlo Ancelotti's side were pegged back when Lucas Torro equalised 13 minutes after the break. Rodrygo, however, tapped in a loose ball in the 70th minute to claim a much needed win for Real and a confidence boost after a run of poor results as they prepare to host Manchester City in their Champions League semi-final first leg on Tuesday.

* Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp hailed Mohamed Salah after the Egyptian striker's winner against Brentford on Saturday set a number of milestones and kept the Reds in the hunt for Champions League football next season. Salah struck from close range in the 13th minute to score for the ninth home game in a row, making it to 30 goals this season and a century of goals at Liverpool's iconic stadium since he joined from Italian Serie A side AS Roma in 2017.

* Bayern Munich were made to work hard for more than an hour before battling past hosts Werder Bremen 2-1 on Saturday to go provisionally four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga with three games left to play. Second-half goals from Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane gave Bayern their second win in their last four league matches to move up to 65 points, four ahead of Borussia Dortmund, who have four matches left to play and host VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday.

* Union Berlin slumped to a 1-0 loss at Augsburg on Saturday to drop to fourth place in the Bundesliga with three matches remaining, putting their Champions League participation next season at risk. Union have enjoyed their best ever campaign but with only one win in their last five league games they are fourth in the standings on 56 points, one behind RB Leipzig, 1-0 winners over Freiburg who are fifth on 56.

* A magnanimous gesture by Manchester United's goal-machine Erling Haaland left Pep Guardiola fuming on Saturday after the Norwegian striker ignored his manager's orders to take a spot-kick and handed the ball to team mate Ilkay Gundogan. After the German midfielder had scored a first-half brace to put the Premier League leaders 2-0 up against Leeds United, Guardiola yelled from the sidelines for Haaland to take the penalty they had been awarded in the closing minutes.

* Midfielder Federico Dimarco and striker Romelu Lukaku were both on target as Inter Milan secured a 2-0 victory at AS Roma in Serie A on Saturday, their fifth consecutive win in all competitions. Inter bounced back to fourth in the table on 63 points, two ahead of fifth-placed AC Milan who secured a 2-0 home win over Lazio earlier on Saturday. The Milan sides meet in the Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday.

* Petra Kvitova has withdrawn from next week's Italian Open with an injury to her right foot, she said on social media on Saturday. The Czech world number 10, who won the Miami Open last month, added that she hopes to recover in time for the second Grand Slam of the year at the French Open.

* Chelsea's interim manager Frank Lampard said he was happy to see his side finally playing like a team after they snapped a nine-match winless run in all competitions with a 3-1 victory at Bournemouth on Saturday. Chelsea have looked a fractured outfit after a number of arrivals in the last two transfer windows and three different managers this season, but they showed glimpses of finally gelling together as a unit to end a six-match losing run.

* Formula One is assessing potential new teams but Red Bull boss Christian Horner says it would be very difficult to fit them in because of limited space in paddocks and pitlanes. While some circuits can accommodate more than the current 10 two-car teams, others, and particularly some of the older historic venues, could find it more challenging.

* Urawa Red Diamonds coach Maciej Skorza admitted he had to sacrifice his football principals to secure their third Asian Champions League title with victory over defending champions Al-Hilal on Saturday. Official statistics recorded Urawa failed to register a single shot on target over the 90 minutes of the second leg and had less then 30% possession but still won - both on the night and on aggregate - through Andre Carrillo's own goal. That strike, which came three minutes into the second half at a packed Saitama Stadium, sealed a 2-1 aggregate win for the Japanese after a 1-1 draw in Riyadh last weekend and delivered another Asian title after previous wins in 2007 and 2017.

* Al-Hilal coach Ramon Diaz refused to blame his team's packed schedule for their failure to defend the Asian Champions League title as the Saudi Arabian side surrendered the crown to Urawa Red Diamonds on Saturday. The Riyadh-based club were aiming to become the first team to lift the trophy on five occasions but an own goal from Andre Carrillo handed Urawa a 1-0 win in the second leg at Saitama Stadium to seal a 2-1 aggregate victory for the Japanese side.

* Genoa secured promotion to Serie A on Saturday thanks to a 2-1 win over Ascoli and Bari's 1-1 draw at Modena, a return to the top flight after one season away. Genoa moved to 70 points, eight clear of third-placed Bari and four behind leaders Frosinone, and can celebrate direct promotion to the top flight with two games remaining.

* New Zealand's Nick Cassidy won the Monaco e-Prix from ninth on the grid for Envision Racing on Saturday to go top of the all-electric Formula E world championship after back-to-back victories. Fellow-Kiwi Mitch Evans finished second for Jaguar, 0.390 behind, with McLaren's Jake Dennis going from 11th to third for the Andretti team in a race that ended tamely behind the safety car.

* Remco Evenepoel underlined his credentials as a favourite for the Giro d'Italia as he stormed to victory in Saturday's stage one, an individual time trial along the Adriatic coast, to take the leader's maglia rosa jersey. The Belgian finished with a time of 21 minutes and 18 seconds, a full 22 seconds ahead of Italian Filippo Ganna with Joao Almeida third a further seven seconds behind.

* Wigan Athletic have failed to pay salaries for a fifth time this season and some players and staff will be paid next week, the second-tier Championship club said on Saturday. Wigan were deducted three points in March by the English Football League for failing to pay salaries and were charged this season for late payments in June, July and October.
