Typhoon Kalmaegi heads to northern coastal areas

Nhan Dan – Typhoon Kalmaegi had directly affected the Tonkin Gulf and Vietnam’s northern coastal provinces by the evening of September 16, bringing heavy rain and whirlwinds, said the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorology Forecasting.

Rainfalls of 20-40mm have been recorded across the northeastern provinces, with Co To Island recording 111mm.

As of 8pm on September 16, Kalmaegi was at about 21.2 degrees north latitude, 107.8 degrees east longitude off the coast of Quang Ninh province. Strongest winds in the eye of the storm reached 75-102kph.

The centre forecast that in the next 6-12 hours, Kalmaegi will move quickly west-northwestwards at a speed of 25-30kph. It will make landfall in Quang Ninh province, continuing its west to northwestern direction to enter deeply into the mainland and then weaken to a tropical low pressure.

As of 8am on Wednesday, the centre of the low pressure was expected to be located at about 22.3 degrees north latitude and 104.6 degrees east longitude in the northern mountainous region, with winds below 39kph.

From 5pm on September 16, Quang Ninh province has implementing a ban on motorcycles and rudimentary vehicles from crossing Bai Chay Bridge. School students in the province have been allowed to stay away from school due to the impact of the storm.

In Hai Phong, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Cao Duc Phat worked with the city’s authorities this afternoon on preparation and measures to deal with the storm.

By noon of September 16, no vessels were active off Hai Phong coast. All 3,894 vessels with 14,000 fishermen on board and 515 aquaculture cages have been moved to safe shelter.

Haiphong also arranged evacuation for more than 15,000 people in low-lying areas in Cat Hai, Do Son, Thuy Nguyen, and Duong Kinh before 5pm on Tuesday.

In Thai Binh province, as of 3pm Tuesday, preparation for Kalmaegi was basically completed. Over 8,350 households with 19,230 residents have been relocated to safe places.

Also on Tuesday, dozens of flights of Vietnam Airlines, Jetstar Pacific Airlines, and Vietjet Air have been cancelled or adjusted following Kalmaegi impacts.
