Anh Vien won the majority of votes cast by 125 journalists representing over 50 media agencies with the highest score of 917 points.
Vien had a fruitful 2013 with a collection of 24 gold medals won: 11 at the 37th Southeast Asia (SEA) Age Group Swimming Championships, six at the 5th ASEAN School Games, three at the Asian Youth Swimming Championships, one at the 4th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games and three at the 27th SEA Games.
World blitz champion Le Quang Liem came second in the poll at 662 points, trailed by shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh (597 points), Vu Thi Huong (athletics, 590), Thach Kim Tuan (weightlifting, 387), Nguyen Van Lai (athletics, 283), Phan Thi Ha Thanh (gymnastics, 222), Ly Hoang Nam (tennis, 174), Nguyen Van Hung (athletics, 148) and Nguyen Tien Minh (badminton, 135).
Dang Anh Tuan, who trains Anh Vien, was honoured as the most outstanding coach of 2013 with 328 points, 113 above runner-up Nguyen Thi Nhung (shooting) and 208 above third-place Nguyen Dinh Minh (athletics).
Track and field athlete Cao Ngoc Hung earned the ‘best disabled athlete’ title with 353 points while swimming trainer Dong Quoc Cuong was voted as the year’s most outstanding coach for disabled athletes with 179 points.
