Tourism activities record optimistic signals during 2024 New Year Holiday

During the three-day New Year Holiday (December 30, 2023 – January 1, 2024), localities around the country served about 3.2 million tourists, a year-on-year increase of 6.6%.

The average room capacity at tourist accommodation establishments reached nearly 50%, with some tourism centres across the country recording an even higher capacity at about 70%. The assurance of security and safety was maintained, helping people and tourists celebrate the New Year happily, safely, and economically.

The localities have proactively innovated and developed diverse tourism products, launched many promotional programmes and service packages to attract more tourists and increase their spending and length of stay.

The highlight of the holiday was that many localities tested and introduced night tourism products to serve tourists. Tourism products associated with the cultural characteristics of ethnic minorities were promoted, becoming an impressive highlight during the 2024 New Year Holiday. In addition, the demand to experience local culture with tours to unique highland areas also increased. Ecotours and resorts near home were also preferred by many tourists.

Customer service indicators and total revenue from tourists in many provinces and cities were basically equivalent to the same period last year, while some localities recorded an increase in quantity. For example, Ho Chi Minh City was estimated to have welcomed and served 1.65 million visitors, with total revenue from tourists at 6.4 trillion VND; Khanh Hoa welcomed and served about 465,900 visitors, with 498 billion VND from total tourism revenue; and Hanoi welcomed and served around 402,000 visitors, a year-on-year increase of 65%.

International visitors to Vietnam continued to increase in the first days of the year. Positive signals continued to be recorded for some key tourist areas, especially regarding passengers from cruise ships — a stream of high-end tourists.

The international visitors to Vietnam came mainly from the Republic of Korea, China, Japan, America, Australia, Europe, Thailand, and India. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are estimated to have welcomed 72,000 and 46,500 foreign arrivals, respectively.

The Vietnam National Authority of Tourism said that the results of tourism activities during the 2024 New Year Holiday showed the effectiveness of the new visa policy. This is a positive signal regarding the sector’s target of welcoming 17-18 million international visitors in 2024.
