>> Vietnam advances to AFC U-19 finals as group leaders
The competition, also known as the Southeast Asian U-22 Football Championship, features 11 teams in the region competing in a round robin format in two groups. The top two finishers from each group will advance to the semi-final round.
U19 Vietnam joins Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and hosts Brunei in Group B, while Group A is constituted of five teams, namely Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Timor Leste and the Philippines.
The Vietnamese team will play Singapore in their opener tomorrow before taking on remaining group opponents: Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Cambodia on August 11, 13, 16 and 18, respectively.
At the previous tournament two years ago, U19 Vietnam finished in third place overall after losing the semi-final clash 0-2 to Indonesia.
The fortnight-long event is considered a perfect warm-up for U19 Vietnam players prior to their campaign at the 2014 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-19 Championship finals, scheduled to take place in Myanmar in October.
