Upholding the long-standing Vietnam-Laos special solidarity

At the invitation of General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith, State President Vo Van Thuong is leading a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation on an official visit to Laos from April 10-11.

This is an important diplomatic activity of both two countries. It is the first foreign visit of President Vo Van Thuong and Laos is the first country that the President visits in his new position.

The official visit of President Vo Van Thuong to Laos takes place in the context that the great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos have continued to develop in a deeper and more effective manner. The agreements reached by the senior leaders of the two Parties and two countries as well as the cooperation agreements and deals have been actively carried out, achieving good results in all fields. The two countries celebrated their 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties as well as the 45th anniversary of the Vietnam-Laos Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation.

Political relations between Vietnam and Laos have been implemented in many forms in a strong and stable manner with high political trust, maintaining a pivotal and directional role in the overall relationship between the two countries. The two sides have maintained regular contacts and exchanges at all levels and all channels, especially in the successful organisation of the Vietnam-Laos Solidarity and Friendship Year 2022.

Economic, trade and investment cooperation between the two nations’ has been promoted. Two-way trade turnover between Vietnam and Laos reached more than 1.703 billion USD in 2022, marking a year-on-year increase of 25% and exceeding the set target. Vietnam is the third largest investor in Laos, with 239 projects worth total 5.36 billion USD. The investment projects of Vietnamese enterprises in the fields of telecommunications, banking and agriculture have been operating effectively, making positive contributions to the socio-economic development of Laos.

Defence and security cooperation continues to be a pillar in the relationship between the two countries, contributing to maintaining political stability, security and social order in both countries and their border areas.

Cooperation in education, human resource development and vocational training are of special interest to both sides, especially high-quality human resources.

Cooperation in culture and tourism has been also promoted, especially since the two countries have effectively controlled the pandemic and fully reopened.

The two countries have promoted their close cooperation in regional and international issues of mutual concern and supported each other at multilateral forums, especially at the United Nations, ASEAN, and sub-regional cooperation mechanisms.

During his official visit to Laos, President Vo Van Thuong, General Secretary of the LPRP and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith, and a number of Lao leaders will review and evaluate cooperation results between the two Parties and countries. They will exchange and unify major orientations and policies as well as specific measures to develop the Vietnam-Laos friendship and cooperation in a deeper and more effective and sustainable manner. The two sides will discuss their cooperation at multilateral forums, thus contributing to solving regional and international issues.

President Vo Van Thuong’s choice of brother country Laos for his first official visit in his new position affirms the special nature of Vietnam-Laos relations, demonstrating the trust and cohesion between the high-level leaders from the two countries as well as the good feelings between the peoples.

The visit affirms Vietnam's strong support for the renewal, development and safeguarding of Laos, while contributing to supporting the country in successfully implementing the Resolution of the 11th National Congress of the LPRP and its 9th Five-Year National Socio-Economic Development Plan.

During his visit, President Vo Van Thuong will meet with the Vietnamese community in Laos, showing the Party and State's attention and sharing to the community, promoting the great solidarity and strength of the whole nation. The visit contributes to enhancing understanding of the great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos among the two peoples, especially the younger generations.
