[Video] ASEAN’s future: New thinking, new ambitions and Viet Nam’s imprint

“The Davos of ASEAN” — that is how some journalists and international scholars have playfully described the ASEAN Future Forum 2026, recently held in Ha Noi. Going far beyond the scope of a diplomatic initiative, the ASEAN Future Forum has evolved into a genuine regional strategic platform, where long-term challenges are debated and where future norms, standards and international rules are shaped.

The world is changing at an unprecedented pace, and the challenges facing ASEAN today are vastly different from those of the past. The bloc’s value-based thinking must be renewed through more flexible and effective ways of working.

During his meeting with delegation leaders attending the ASEAN Future Forum, Party General Secretary and State President To Lam delivered more than a diplomatic message. His remarks represented a candid challenge to ASEAN’s traditional operating mindset. By weighing the tangible benefits delivered to people and businesses against the number of documents and mechanisms created, Viet Nam’s top leader put forward a practical, action-oriented framework for ASEAN’s future.

At the same time, a thought-provoking question raised by Prime Minister Le Minh Hung at the opening ceremony of the third ASEAN Future Forum captured the attention of the entire region. It reflected both a deep sense of concern and an ambitious vision for ASEAN’s future.
