Viet Nam, Malaysia forge cultural ties at EXPO 2025

A vibrant cultural exchange programme between the Viet Nam and Malaysia Pavilions was held at EXPO 2025 in Osaka, Kansai (Japan) on June 21, offering international audiences a rich and dynamic showcase of Southeast Asian traditions.

The event marked the beginning of a series of cultural cooperation activities between Viet Nam and ASEAN member states at EXPO 2025. Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair in 2025, was the first partner to join hands in this initiative.

Performers from the Viet Nam National Academy of Music and 12 Malaysian artists in traditional attire took to the stage, delivering a captivating fusion of Vietnamese bamboo instruments and Malaysia’s iconic Wau Bulan dance. The outdoor setting at the Malaysia Pavilion came alive with the harmonious blend of Vietnamese monochord, flutes, and drums alongside Malaysian rhythms.

A highlight of the programme was an interactive segment, where both nations’ artists invited global visitors to join in the Joget folk dance (also known as Chakunchak), accompanied by Vietnamese traditional music. The joyful atmosphere reflected the EXPO spirit of cultural connection through art.

The event also celebrated a milestone year — 2025 marks 30 years since Viet Nam officially joined ASEAN. Beyond performance, the programme signalled the start of a broader effort to deepen bilateral and multilateral cultural ties between Viet Nam and other ASEAN nations throughout the EXPO.

Looking ahead, the Viet Nam Pavilion plans further collaborations with ASEAN partners to host cultural, culinary, and artistic events. These efforts aim to present the region’s rich heritage to the world and promote peace, unity, and sustainable development.

Viet Nam will also take part in ASEAN Day on August 8, and on September 10 will host “ASEAN Presents Viet Nam” — a showcase of the country’s culture and identity at the ASEAN Pavilion.
