With a strong aspiration and will to build a better world alongside humanity, Viet Nam has continuously affirmed its stance as an increasingly proactive and responsible partner in shaping and addressing common global issues.

Half a century of companionship

Becoming the 149th member of the United Nations nearly 50 years ago marked a historic milestone in Viet Nam’s development and global integration.

Over nearly half a century, the cooperation between Viet Nam and the United Nations has helped preserve and promote Viet Nam’s national interests, particularly by maintaining and strengthening a peaceful, secure environment conducive to national development; advancing deeper international integration; enhancing Viet Nam’s status and image globally; and deepening relations between Viet Nam and other countries and partners.

Recognising the role of the United Nations as the largest multilateral organisation in the world whose mission is to maintain international peace and security and promote friendship and cooperation among nations, Viet Nam affirms that cooperation with the United Nations remains a key priority in the foreign policy of the Party and State.

By actively and increasingly substantively contributing to United Nations activities, Viet Nam is considered by the international community a successful model in achieving the Millennium Development Goals and a committed country that has seriously implemented the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Viet Nam is considered by the international community a successful model in achieving the Millennium Development Goals and a committed country that has seriously implemented the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Alongside promoting respect for the United Nations Charter, international law, equality, cooperation for development, and the right to self-determination of peoples, Viet Nam actively engages in discussions and the adoption of key United Nations resolutions and declarations on disarmament, countering the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, combating terrorism, human rights protection, and development cooperation.

Thanks to tireless contributions, Viet Nam has been trusted and elected to many important United Nations positions and bodies, leaving significant marks in the General Assembly, Security Council, Human Rights Council, and the Economic and Social Council.

Most notably, most recently, Viet Nam was re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 term with the highest number of votes among Asia-Pacific countries for this term, further affirming Viet Nam’s growing role, standing, and international prestige.

This strong confidence in Viet Nam reflects the solidarity, support, and high regard of the United Nations and the international community toward Viet Nam’s consistent foreign policy and development achievements.

On October 23, State President Luong Cuong inspected preparations for the opening ceremony of the signing of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime (Ha Noi Convention), scheduled to take place on October 25–26 at the National Convention Centre in My Dinh, Ha Noi.

Amid the world's complex and unpredictable developments, Viet Nam continues to receive expectations and trust from the international community to promote cooperation for sustainable development.

From being an active and responsible partner of the international community, Viet Nam steadily affirms its growing role and responsibility in shaping and addressing common global matters. Among these, hosting the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime on October 25 and 26 is a highly significant event for Viet Nam on its path to international integration in the current context.

The world has warned about the urgent threat of cybercrime, which extend beyond financially motivated acts. Besides direct financial losses and interruptions to production and business, these crimes target other objectives including damaging corporate reputations, undermining public trust, involving elections or public perception, and even causing community psychological impacts by attacking critical infrastructures such as energy, healthcare, and telecommunications.

Choosing Viet Nam to host the signing ceremony of the Ha Noi Convention highlights the international community's recognition of Viet Nam's active role in drafting the Convention, as well as its capacity to promote solutions to establish legal mechanisms to address global challenges.

In this context, the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime is the first global legal framework on cybercrime in the past 20 years. It aims to harmonise national laws, promote cross-border investigation cooperation, and facilitate cooperation on electronic evidence, legal assistance, and technical support.

Experts say that choosing Viet Nam to host the signing ceremony highlights the international community's recognition of Viet Nam's active role in drafting the Convention, as well as its capacity to promote solutions to establish legal mechanisms to address global challenges.

Moreover, hosting the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, also known as the Ha Noi Convention, demonstrates Viet Nam's proactive role and responsibility in cybersecurity. The event further elevates Viet Nam’s role as a neutral coordinator and a bridging nation in global governance.

Hosting the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime signing ceremony, the capital Ha Noi is expected to become a focal point of multilateral diplomacy, witnessing a historic milestone in the global effort to build a safer, more cooperative, and sustainable digital world. The event also affirms Viet Nam's diplomatic success and global recognition of its increasingly important role, especially in the fields of digital security and global technical cooperation.
