Venerable Quy, who is known to local people as Master Quy, was assigned to chair the pagoda in 2001.
Over the past seven years, Master Quy, apart from his Buddhist duties, has spent time doing good deeds. He has called on many kind-hearted individuals and organisations to provide support for disadvantaged people to overcome their difficulties to reintegrate into to the community.
He has travelled to even more remote villages in the districts of Tan Hong, Hong Ngu, Tam Nong, Lai Vung and Thap Muoi, to provide assistance to poor and disadvantaged people. As a result, families of poor people and lonely elderly people have received houses of solidarity, boats and support. In many localities, roads and bridges have been built with the support from Venerable Quy.
Over the past three years, the monk has collected around VND 2 billion to provide support and help for people in Tam Nong district. Thanks to his help, many people have had warm houses and capital for developing production, gradually overcoming their difficulties. In addition, disadvantaged children have an opportunity to integrate into the community.
Nguyen Hong Minh, over 80 years old in Phu Cuong commune, who has been given a house of solidarity on an area of 32 square metres, said in a moving voice: "Thanks to Master Quy's support and help, I have had a new house."
Nguyen Thanh Dai in Phu Ninh commune shared the same happiness as Mr Minh on being given a new house.
In addition, Master Quy encouraged families of Buddhist followers to build a civilised and cultural lifestyle, and get involved in charitable activities.
Venerable Quy said: "What I have done is to complete my responsibility and tasks as a citizen. I hope everybody will be able to have a prosperous business and make more of a contribution to the society, making it richer and more civilised."
Recently, the venerable was elected vice president of the Nam Nong Association for Poor Patient Support.
In recognition of his contributions, Master Quy has been presented certificates of merit by the Vietnam Fatherland Front, the People's Committees and Fatherland Fronts at all levels in Dong Thap province.
