The decision was made at the start of the party's national convention in Milwaukee.

This is the third consecutive time the Republican Party has elected Trump as its presidential candidate.

Earlier Monday, Trump chose Ohio US Senator J.D. Vance as his vice presidential running mate.

“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

J.D. Vance and his wife Usha Chilukuri Vance were also at the 2024 Republican National Convention.

J.D. Vance was born James David Vance on August 2, 1984, in Middletown, Ohio. He joined the Marines and served in Iraq, later earned degrees from Ohio State University and Yale Law School. He also worked as a venture capitalist in Silicon Valley.

He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022 and sworn into office in January 2023.

The 2024 Republican National Convention is being held from July 15 to 18, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The 2024 Democratic National Convention is scheduled from August 19 to 22, in Chicago, Illinois.
