Twenty-three male and twenty-four female competitors are fighting one another for the individual titles of the men’s and women’s categories, in nine rounds according to the Swiss system.
This year’s event sees the absence of several popular names such as top Vietnamese chess player, Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Dao Thien Hai and Pham Le Thao Nguyen.
The annual meeting, held jointly by the Vietnam Chess Federation (VCF) and the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, aims to select the best individuals for the national team, in preparation for future regional and world chess competitions.
Following this tournament, the VCF will continue to organise a national xiangqi (Chinese chess) competition for outstanding players in nine days, from December 10 to 18, in the northern province of Quang Ninh.
