Nguyen Van Lai seizes gold, breaking long-standing record

Nguyen Van Lai took the spotlight on Tuesday afternoon as he picked up the second gold medal for Vietnam’s athletics team and broke the 22 year SEA Games record in the men’s 5,000m.

Lai clocked a final time of 14:04.82, smashing the previous record of 14:08.97 set by Malaysia’s Ramachandran Murusamy at the 1993 SEA Games in Singapore.

Lai also claimed gold in this event with a time of 14:19 as the 27th Games took place in Myanmar in 2013. Two years later, his time has improved by nearly 15 seconds

Gymnastics queen Phan Thi Ha Thanh made it through to her second gold medal in this year’s SEA Games after winning the women’s vault final with 13.983 points. Her teammate Dang Nam also won the men’s rings with 15.300 points to secure Vietnam the fifth gymnastics gold.

Tran Phi Hung brought home the first gold medal for the billiards and snooker team after defeating his Vietnamese teammate Ma Minh Cam 100-92 in the men’s 1 Cushion Carom final match.

Vietnam also won an additional two silver medals on Tuesday afternoon thanks to cueist Ma Minh Cam in the men’s 1 Cushion Carom and gymnast Pham Phuoc Hung in the men’s rings, while capturing three more bronzes in gymnastics (2) and athletics (1).

As of 5.30pm today, Vietnam is in third place in the SEA Games standings with 31 gold, 15 silver and 36 bronze medals. Singapore and Thailand make up the remainder of top three with 47 and 37 gold medals respectively.
