Seventy years ago, on March 13, 1954, Vietnamese soldiers fired the first shots to begin the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, attacking the strongest stronghold of the French colonialists. After 56 days and nights, heroic Vietnamese soldiers overcame the storms of bombs and bullets and raised the flag of Vietnam on the top of the command tunnel of French General De Castries.

The Vietnamese troops wiped out more than 16,000 French soldiers, destroying the fortified base that was considered by the West to be an “impregnable fortress”. This was also the first time in history that such a large expeditionary force of a Western empire was destroyed in a colonial country.

Nhan Dan unveiled the special page to recreate the 56 days and nights of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign and the globe-shaking victory as well as featuring the sound political and military policy of the Party led by President Ho Chi Minh, and the solidarity and fighting spirit of the Vietnamese army and people.

The page features six categories: News; Campaign developments; International public opinion; Dien Bien today; Questions and answers about the Dien Bien Phu Campaign; and Multimedia.

The most unique feature of the page is the Campaign Map, which recreates the 56 days and nights of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign in the form of 56 diary entries, from March 13, 1954, to May 7, 1954.
