Olympics: Australia's Ariarne Titmus wins women's 200m freestyle for second gold in Tokyo

Two days after being crowned the women's Olympic 400m freestyle champion, Australian swimming sensation Ariarne Titmus has doubled her tally of golds with a stunning swim in the 200m freestyle final on July 28.

In a stacked field, that included 400m freestyle world record holder Katie Ledecky (USA) and 200m freestyle world record holder Federica Pellegrini, Titmus proved herself a class above the competition, winning the final in an Olympic Record time of 1:53.50, ahead of Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong (China) (silver) and Canada's Rio 2016 100m freestyle champion Penny Oleksiak (bronze).

Hungary's Kristof Milak cruises to victory in the 200m butterfly

Hungary's Kristof Milak won the 200m butterfly today and set an Olympic record time of 1:51.25, breaking Michael Phelps record of 1:52.03 set in Beijing 2008.

The current world record holder gained an earlier lead against South Africa's Chad le Clos in the first half of the race, but stayed ahead of the pack in the last lap to touch the wall first, followed by Japan's Honda Tomoru who took silver and Italy's Federico Burdisso, who placed third.

Despite being unable to break his own 1:50.73 which was his target for this butterfly event, Milak posted the third-fastest swim of his career.

Katie Ledecky breezes to first women’s Olympic 1500m freestyle gold

Team USA’s Katie Ledecky bounced back from 200m freestyle disappointment to storm to the first ever 1500m freestyle Olympic title at Tokyo 2020 on July 28. This year marks the Olympic debut of the category, which has been part of the world championship competition since 2001.

The 24-year-old swimmer, who was the favourite for gold, covered the metric mile at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre in 15:37.34, which is slightly slower than the Olympic record of 15:35.35 in the heats.

Ledecky’s team-mate Erica Sullivan came home for the silver medal in 15:41.41, giving the USA another one-two finish in the pool. Germany’s Sarah Kohler finished a further 1.60 seconds behind to claim the bronze.

Double gold in the pool for Japan’s Ohashi Yui

Japan’s Ohashi Yui won the women's 200m individual medley on July 28, replicating the 400m IM gold from Monday, making this the seventh straight Olympics where the women's 200 IM and 400 IM champions have been the same person.

The United States won silver and bronze courtesy of Alex Walsh and Kate Douglass, respectively.

Team GB win gold in men's 4x200 freestyle relay

Team GB – Tom Dean, James Guy, Matthew Richards and Duncan Scott – topped the 4x200m relay today and eclipsed favourites USA to win gold whilst also setting a new European record of 6:58.58.

Whilst the USA made a strong start in the first leg of the race, Duncan Scott saved the day when he pulled a huge lead at the last 100m metres of the race, helping Team GB secure its first gold a century after it won in London 1908.

Mikhail Dovgalyuk touched the wall helping ROC secure second place at Tokyo 2020 whilst Australia took bronze.

Rowing: Hugo Boucheron and Matthieu Androdias seal victory for France in double sculls

Hugo Boucheron and Matthieu Androdias from France powered through the last 500 metres to win the men's double sculls in an Olympic best time of 6:00.33. In a tight race, the French duo edged out the Netherlands' Melvin Twellaar and Stef Broennik who dropped 20 seconds behind the new Olympic champions.

With Netherlands taking silver, Chinese duo Liu Zhiyu and Zhang Liang placed third with a time of 6:03.63. This is the second gold medal from France after Adrien Hardy and Sebastien Vieilledent took on gold in Athens 2004.

Australia storm home to win rowing gold in women's four final

The Aussie team, made up of Lucy Stephan, Rosemary Popa, Jessica Morrison and Annabelle McIntyre, rowed to a stunning victory in the women's four final, setting an Olympic best time of 6:15.37 just 0.34 seconds ahead of the Netherlands.

The Netherlands, silver medallists in the 2019 world championships, will once again have to content themselves with the second spot on the podium, while an impressive Ireland team finished third to take bronze.

Romania’s Ancuta Bodnar and Simona Radis won the first rowing gold medal of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in women’s double sculls on July 28.

The Romanian crew were in a class of their own, dominating the field at the Sea Forest Waterway to add an Olympic crown to the many other titles they have won in the past two years. They led by two boat lengths with 500 metres to go and roared on to a commanding victory in 6:41.03, a new Olympic best time.

New Zealand’s Brooke Donohue and Hannah Osborne finished the 2,000m course in 6:44.82 to push the Dutch boat of Roos de Jong and Lisa Scheenaard into third place.

Australia powers through to win gold in men's rowing fours

The Australian quartet - Alexander Purnell, Spencer Turrin, Jack Hargreaves - glided to victory in the men's rowing fours today at Sea Forest Waterway in Olympic record time of 5:42.76.

They were dominant from the very start, pulling away ahead of the pack early with reigning champions Great Britain struggling to catch up.

The Romanian team pushed through last part of the race to win second at 5:43.13, whilst Italy came up from behind to win bronze, posting a time of 5:43.60.

Netherlands win gold in men's quadruple sculls

Netherlands won the men’s quadruple sculls in a world best time at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

The Dutch crew of Lucas Theodoor Dirk Uittenbogaard, Abe Wiersma, Tone Wieten and Koen Metsemakers outsprinted Great Britain over the final 500 metres to win the gold medal at the Sea Forest Waterway.

Their time of 5:32.03 beat the previous world best time, which was set by Ukraine at the 2014 world championships, by 0.23 seconds.

China storm to victory in women's quadruple sculls

China won the women's quadruple sculls in spectacular fashion, setting a world best time in the process.

The crew of Chen Yunxia, Zhang Ling, Lyu Yang and Cui Xiaotong finished in 6:05.13, shaving more than a second off the previous best time, set by the Germany in 2014.

Poland took silver, finishing more than six seconds behind the Chinese quartet, while Australia won bronze in 6:12.08 for the country's fourth medal of the day.

Annemiek van Vleuten gains ultimate redemption in women's cycling individual time trial

Annemiek van Vleuten of the Netherlands won the women's individual time trial in spectacular fashion, finishing the 22.1km race in 30:13.49, a full 56.47 seconds ahead of Switzerland's Marlen Reusser.

Behind her, Swiss rider Reusser took home an impressive silver medal in a time of 31:09.96, while the Netherlands' rider Anna van der Breggen joins her compatriot van Vleuten on the podium after swiping bronze in 31:15.12.
