Olympics: Quan Hongchan, 14, scores perfect tens to win women's 10m platform diving gold

China's Quan Hongchan wowed the judges to take gold in the women's 10 metre platform diving at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday.

The impeccable Quan, only 14 years of age, barely made a ripple as she surged ahead with a score of 466.20. Teammate Chen Yuxi won silver, more than 40 points back on 425.40, with Melissa Wu of Australia third on 371.40.

But the final belonged to Quan, who thrilled and amazed in equal measure to take an unforgettable diving gold.

Quan, who won the 2020 national championships at only 13 years old, executed two dives the judges scored unanimously as 10, with a third given 10 after two judges' scores were discounted.

Canoe sprint: Australia win the men's kayak double 1000m

The Australia pairing of Thomas Green and Jean van der Westhuyzen won Olympic gold in the men's kayak double 1000m beating the favoured duo from Germany, Max Hoff and Jacob Schopf, the reigning world champions. Czech Republic's best friends and crewmates Radek Slouf and Josef Dostal claim bronze.

Australia took the lead right from the off at the Sea Forest Waterway and no doubt expected a charge from the German pairing but Green and van der Westhuyzen stayed ahead throughout to claim a surprise win. At race end, the German and Australia boats came together with the Antipodeans almost consoling the German powerhouses.

Boxing: Albert Batyrgaziev of ROC wins men’s featherweight gold

Albert Batyrgaziev of the ROC team won the men’s featherweight boxing gold medal beating Team USA’s Duke Ragan in the final on Thursday.

Batyrgaziev, the number two seed, secured the title by a split decision, 3-2, after the verdict went to the judges’ scorecards at the Kokugikan Arena.

Ragan, who was unseed in the tournament, received the silver, which is the USA’s second boxing medal of the Olympics in Tokyo. Ghana’s Samuel Takyi and Lazaro Alvarez of Cuba won the division’s bronze medals.

Athletics: Italian Massimo Stano wins gold in the men’s 20km race walk

In stifling conditions, Italy's Massimo Stano crossed the line at Sapporo Odori Park with a roar as he won the men's 20km race walk ahead of the Japanese pair of Koki Ikeda and Toshikazu Yamanishi, who won silver and bronze, respectively.

Cycling track: Netherlands' Shanne Braspennincx cycles to women's keirin gold

Shanne Braspennincx of the Netherlands won a superb gold in the women's keirin final storming to the front to arrive at the finish line +0.061 ahead of New Zealand's silver medallist Ellesse Andrews.

Canada's Lauriane Genest finished third to win bronze.

Great Britain's Matt Walls became the new Olympic champion in men's omnium after a stellar afternoon of riding at Izu Velodrome.

Walls (153 points) finished 29 points ahead of New Zealand's Campbell Stewart (129 points) who took silver with Italy's Elia Viviani settling for bronze.

Table tennis: Hong Kong (China) battle to women's team bronze

Hong Kong (China) fought back valiantly to win the women’s team bronze against Germany. The new Olympic bronze medallists were trailing by one match before changing gear to triumph 3-1 against the Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallists.

It was the fourth medal won by Hong Kong athletes at Tokyo 2020.

Women’s football: Team USA win bronze in 4-3 thriller against Australia

Megan Rapione and Carli Lloyd led the United States to the bronze medal at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 with a 4-3 win over Australia at Ibaraki Kashima Stadium.

Volleyball: ROC cruise through to men's final with shock win over Brazil

ROC beat three-time men's Olympic volleyball gold medallists, Brazil to secure their spot in the Olympic final. After Brazil took the first set 25-18, ROC began to exert their dominance, rattling off three set wins in a row to take a memorable victory 18-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-23.

Kevin Durant and the Americans still have their grip on gold and it's going to take more than a few bad minutes for anyone to take it away from them. They were slow to get started, then awesome afterwards against Australia.

Durant scored 23 points, Devin Booker had 20 and the US blew past and eventually blew away the Aussies 97-78 on Thursday in the Olympic men's basketball semifinals after falling into a 15-point hole.
