>> Vietnam finishes fifth overall as Beach Games wraps up
The information was released by the organising board at an international press conference held in Da Nang’s Furama Hotel on September 23.
ABG 5 will feature 165 sets of medals in 22 events: swimming, water polo, Kabaddi, men’s football, volleyball, handball, basketball, woodball, sepak takraw, wrestling, Sambo, Jujitsu, Kurash, Pencak silat, Vovinam, Muay Thai, Vietnam martial arts, shuttlecock, petanque, bodybuilding, athletics and rowing.
The logo of ABG 5 represents sand and waves in the shape of youthful and energetic sportsmen surrounding the icon of the Olympic Council of Asia, while the mascot features a salangane, a distinctive bird of Vietnam’s southern central coast, with comical hair and a small V-shaped tail (a characteristic of a salangane) holding a lit torch representing the solidarity, peace and vitality of mankind.
Today, the organising board will launch the countdown clock for the ABG 5 that will count down to the Games’ opening ceremony falling on September 24, 2016.
At the previous ABG held last year in Phuket, Thailand, Vietnam ended up in fifth place overall winning a total of eight gold, 12 silver and 20 bronze medals. The country has set a target of making the top four at the 2016 Games.
