The 1,570-metre bridge's design was inspired by the wings of a seabird and was built at a total cost of nearly VND2.2 trillion (US$94.6 million) after 33 months.

Speaking at the event, PM Phuc highlighted the importance of the bridge to opening a new development space as Hai Phong is aiming to relocate its administrative centre to the north of the Cam River.

He said expanding Hai Phong’s development space is necessary as the port city is growing rapidly, adding that developing technical infrastructure, especially transport infrastructure, is what the city is implementing in a serious manner.

The head of government also thanked the people who gave away their land for the bridge, noting that such a development is worth celebrating and a mark of a strongly growing sea city.

The Hoang Van Thu Bridge was designed and constructed entirely by Vietnamese architects.
