This is the fourth working session of the government leader with Mekong Delta provinces and cities within the past two weeks in a bid to ease obstacles for enterprises, accelerate the disbursement of public investment, and recover the local economy.

PM Phuc said that it is a great challenge for the Mekong Delta region to implement a dual task of preventing the COVID-19 pandemic and promoting production and business activities.

However, the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) taking effect on August 1 is expected to create a good impact on the region, the leading production hub of food, fruit and aquatic products of Vietnam.

The PM expressed his wish that the region, with more than 20 million people, a strategic position and good economic conditions, will strive to further contribute to the entire development of the country.

It acts not only as a strategic hub of agricultural production but also as a driving force for the economic development of the whole country, PM Phuc noted.

He also emphasised the significance of the accelerated disbursement of public investment and the removal of difficulties for enterprises to promote local growth.

He noted that the region may propose specific policies and mechanisms, particularly in investment procedures to facilitate investors, and that the Government will consider such proposals to support the region’s development.

Mekong Delta region faced unprecedented difficulties and challenges in the first six months of this year. The region's average economic growth was only 1.2% while the national average increased by 1.81%.

Eight out of thirteen provinces posted positive growthwhile five localities suffered negative growth.
