Quang Ngai marks 50th anniversary of Binh Hoa Massacre

NDO—A ceremony was held in the central province of Quang Ngai on December 2 to mark a massacre carried out 50 years ago by soldiers from the Republic of Korea (ROK) in the commune of Binh Hoa in Binh Son District.

Incense was offered to commemorate victims of the massacre.

Prior to the service, wreaths of flowers from Party and Government agencies in the province and the ROK’s Jeju Writers’ Association were laid at a memorial to victims of the killing.

On December 3, 1966, when they discovered a cellar under the house of Mr Dinh Trap on their way to raid the village of Tri Hoa in Binh Hoa, a group of ROK soldiers opened fire, threw grenades and thrust bayonets into the cellar, killing fifteen civilians who were hiding there.

Two days later, after abducting 37 local residents, mainly women and children from the two villages of Tri Hoa and Long Binh, ROK soldiers drove them to a large bomb crater on a nearby hill and killed all of them.

The next day, they launched an onslaught across Binh Hoa, killing another 287 civilians.

In just three days, the ROK soldiers had committed a horrible massacre with a total of more than 300 civilian victims.

The Binh Hoa Massacre is evidence of the crimes committed by foreign armies against the Vietnamese people during the Vietnam War.

At the ceremony, relatives of the victims, representatives of the local authorities and many peace-loving organisations from the Republic of Korea solemnly offered incense and flowers to commemorate the victims.

To mark the occasion, the Binh Son Refinery and Petrochemical Company presented 30 gifts to survivors and relatives of the victims of the Binh Hoa Massacre.
