This move includes the dissolution of the existing commune-level administrative units, namely Co To Town, Dong Tien Commune, and Thanh Lan Commune.
Dang Quang Ngan, Deputy Secretary of the Co To District Party Committee, affirmed that the establishment of the Co To Special Zone aims to tap into the district’s potential in marine economy and tourism, to preserve the marine and island ecological environment, to create a breakthrough in attracting investment, and to develop synchronous infrastructure.
Co To is a name with a long-standing history dating back to 1889 that is closely associated with the formation and development of the island district.
The retaining of the name Co To for the new administrative unit aims to preserve traditional values, enhance the tourism brand identity, and align with the local socio-economic development strategy.
The Co To Special Zone will cover an area of 5,368 hectares and have a population of 7,151.
