On a not so successful day for Vietnam young swimmers, Quy Phuoc has become the only ‘bright spot’ as he grabbed the second gold medal for the Vietnam swimming team at this year’s event after Anh Vien’s gold and smashed his own national record of 49.50.

In the men’s 100m freestyle which is considered the strength of athletes from China, RoK and Kazakhstan, Phuoc dazzled the fans with a glorious victory when he beat his strong rivals China’s Liu Junwu and Kazkahstan’s Azaryev Yevgeniy to bring home the precious gold medal in the final competition day of the swimming event at AIMAG 4.

Earlier, Phuoc won a bronze medal in the men’s 100m butterfly and silver in the men’s 200m freestyle event, contributing most to the team’s results of two golds, two silvers and a bronze.

Phuoc’s teammates Nguyen Thi Anh Vien and Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen could not win a medal in the women’s 100m mixed event. Though Vien and Tuyen only finished fourth and fifth with a time of 1:2.37 and 1:2.84, the two swimmers demolished the previous national record of 1:3.30.

In the women’s 100m freestyle, Vien only ranked seventh place. Her teammate Tran Duy Khoi finished fifth in the men’s 100m mixed event with a time of 56.32 but set a new national record.

Yesterday was also the last day of the standard chess event. Vietnam chess star Le Quang Liem only gained two draws at the last competition day yesterday and finished 11th with 4.4 points. On the women’s side, Liem’s teammate Nguyen Thi Thanh An only ranked 12th with 4 points. Chinese chess players won gold medals in both men and women events.

With Phuoc’s only gold medal in the fifth day of the AIMAG 4, Vietnam is temporarily ranked fifth in the medal tally with three gold, five silver and four bronze medals. China took the lead with 20 golds, ten silvers and ten bronzes, followed by the RoK (15, 17, 12), Thailand (7, 3, 6) and Kazakhstan (5, 2, 12).

Vietnam hopes for the sixth day of competition are cueists Ma Xuan Cuong and Nguyen Quoc Nguyen in the billiard sports events while the two players entered semi-finals of the men’s three cushion carom to face two Japanese baize players this morning.

Vietnam athletes also are competing for medals in chess, bowling, kickboxing, kurash, and dance sport today.
