Fourteen subjects were put on trial: Bui Ngoc Cuong (born 1977) from Tho Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province; Nguyen Thi Hang (born 1972) from Dong Trieu, Quang Ninh; Phung Thanh Chuong (born 1969), Nguyen Xuan Linh (born 1995), Nguyen Trung Thanh (born 1995), and Nguyen Dinh Thuan (born 1977) from Ky Anh, Ha Tinh; Nguyen Huu Chien (born 1996) and Nguyen Van Thang (born 1988) from Can Loc, Ha Tinh; Trinh Xuan Thuy (born 1996) from Yen Khanh, Ninh Binh; Nguyen Van Toan (born 1985) from Giao Thuy (Nam Dinh); Nguyen Duc Thoai (born 1990) from Thanh Mien (Hai Duong); Luu Van Tung (born 1996), Luong Van Chai (born 1988), and Tran Van Thu (born 1997), from Tinh Gia, Thanh Hoa,
According to the indictment, on May 14, stemming from China’s illegal placement of its oil drilling rig Haiyang Shiyou-981 in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone in the East Sea, Bui Ngoc Cuong, Nguyen Thi Hang and Nguyen Dinh Thuan made banners and used speakers and slogans to incite riots at Formosa site.
Functional forces at the site attempted to dissolve rioters but they continued disrupting public order, causing traffic jams for several hours, while vandalising property and attacking police during the riots.
At the MCC19, MCC5 companies and Ky Phuong Primary School, where Chinese workers are working and residing, Thang, Chien, Thuy, Thoai, Toan, Chuong, Tung, Thu, Chai, Thanh, and Linh threw stones and fought with Chinese workers, causing disruption to public order and halting manufacturing operations at Formosa. Thang, Chien, and Thuy beat and forcibly obstructed three border guard soldiers on duty. The riots killed three workers and injured dozens, causing public disturbance and serious damaged to Formosa and other companies.
The trial panel sentenced Bui Ngoc Cuong to 30 months in prison, Nguyen Thi Hang 24 months, Nguyen Dinh Thuan 15 months, Phung Thanh Chuong 24 months, Nguyen Trung Thanh 24 months, Nguyen Van Toan 18 months, and Luong Van Chai 15 months on charges of "disturbing public order"; while Nguyen Van Thang was sentenced to 39 months in prison, Trinh Xuan Thuy 24 months and Nguyen Huu Chien 33 months for "disturbing public order" and " actions against authorities on duty". Nguyen Duc Thoai and Luu Van Tung were given 18-month suspended sentences.
