The event was held by the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) in collaboration with the Non-government organisation information centre; Institute of Population, Health and Development (PHAD) and relevant agencies.
Speaking at the seminar, Vice President and General Secretary of the VUSTA, Dr. Pham Van Tan, said that climate change and natural disasters, especially hot weather, drought, thunderstorms, landslides and floods in the northern mountainous, central and central highland provinces as well as saltwater intrusion and lack of fresh water in the Mekong River Delta, have caused severe damage to the production and the life of local people.
On the other hand, Vietnam's water resources are heavily dependent on off-border supplies and are polluted in many areas. Therefore, the assessment of policies and laws on ensuring water source and clean water supply for production and daily life is essential to protect water security, he added.
The delegates discussed issues on the importance of water for the life and health of the people as well as the environment in the face of climate change.
The seminar also highlighted the participation, role and contribution of member organisations in activities related to water and sustainable development in Vietnam.
Notably, the experts talked about the causes of the issues while proposing recommendations and solutions to ensure water security, contributing to the country’s sustainable development.
In addition to the plenary session, three parallel discussions themed “Water with the health”, “Water – Environment and Climate change” and “Legal environment to boost the activities of social organisations” will also be held.
