Park announces Vietnam’s 30-man squad for AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 campaign

On November 9, head coach Park Hang-seo unveiled his 30-man choice for the Vietnamese squad who will be looking to defend their championship title at the AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 to be hosted in Singapore between December 5, 2021 and January 1, 2022.

The five players being left out include Pham Van Cuong (goalkeeper), Ly Cong Hoang Anh, Le Van Do (midfielder), Pham Tuan Hai and Ho Thanh Minh (forward).
Among them, goalie Pham Van Cuong was a newbie in the national team, making it difficult for him to compete against more experienced teammates in the same position. Meanwhile, despite being unnamed for the Singapore trip, young players such as Ly Cong Hoang Anh, Le Van Do and Ho Thanh Minh are still considered future seeds of the Golden Star Warriors.

This morning (November 30), Park’s troops held the last training session of their 10-day camp in Vung Tau City, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province. Later in the afternoon, they will move to Ho Chi Minh City to prepare for their departure to Singapore, slated for December 1.

At the AFF Suzuki Cup 2020, defending champions Vietnam have been drawn into Group B together with Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia and Laos. Group A is made up of Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore and Timor Leste.

In the group stage, the ten participating teams will play in a round robin tournament to decide the top two teams from each group, who will advance to the two-legged semifinals.

The semifinals will be played on a home-and-away basis, with the first leg scheduled for December 22-23, 2021, and the return leg slated for December 25-26.

The two winners of the semifinals will battle it out in a two-legged final to determine the overall champions – with the first leg to commence on December 29, 2021, and the second leg on January 1, 2022.

The Golden Star Warriors will kick-start their campaign with a clash against Laos on December 6, before taking on Malaysia, Indonesia and Cambodia on December 12, 15 and 19, respectively.
