The event marked the launch of community volunteer programmes in Thanh An Island Commune under the theme “For a Green Thanh An in 2026.”
It was also the first time the Viet Nam Youth Federation of Ho Chi Minh City had formed a volunteer team of overseas Vietnamese students as part of the Green Summer volunteer campaign.
The new model helps connect the intellectual resources of young Vietnamese people abroad with social welfare and community-building activities, encourages them to look towards the homeland’s seas and islands, and spreads the spirit of dedication among Vietnamese youths in the period of international integration.
In Thanh An Island Commune, the overseas students joined HCMC Youth Union members and other young people in directly carrying out a range of community projects and activities. The delegation inaugurated a children’s playground worth 50 million VND, including the repair of damaged play equipment, the planting of four shade trees, and the renovation of a toilet facility.
The Executive Board of the City Young Chefs’ Club and the Overseas Students’ Association presented and inaugurated a “Green Library”, worth 60 million VND, at Thanh An Primary School. The City Young Chefs’ Club also donated 160 sets of uniforms, worth 24 million VND, to pupils at Thanh An Preschool.
As part of the programme, the city’s Viet Nam Youth Federation branch also coordinated with “Shark” Le Dang Khoa to award five full scholarships with a total value of 500 million VND, covering four years of tuition fees at public universities for five disadvantaged students in Thanh An Commune who have shown strong determination to overcome difficulties and excel in their studies.
The programme also enabled the overseas students to visit Border Guard Squadron 1 in Can Gio Commune to learn about the management and protection of sovereignty and security along maritime and island borders, thereby helping nurture their love for the homeland, raise awareness of sea and island sovereignty, and highlight the role of young people in national construction and defence.
At the end of July 12, the overseas students joined an arts exchange and campfire programme themed “Going Away to Return.” The event provided a space for them to meet and share stories about their studies, international experiences, and journeys home to contribute to their homeland with HCMC Youth Union members and other young people.
Earlier, on July 11, the Vietnamese Students’ Association in Singapore presented 50 gifts, each worth 500,000 VND, and a social welfare project worth 20 million VND to the Thi Nghe Centre for the Support of People with Disabilities and Orphans.
