Suzuki wins Japan’s first gold medal of Tokyo 2020 Paralympics

The host nation has their first gold medal of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games after Suzuki Takayuki won the men's 100m freestyle S4 final at Tokyo Aquatics Centre on August 26.

Suzuki won Japan's first gold medal of the Games after touching in a Paralympic Record time of 1:21.58 in the men's 100m freestyle S4.

It is the Japanese swimmers fifth Paralympic Games but just his second gold medal and it comes 13 years after he won his last Paralympic title at Beijing 2008 in the 50m breaststroke SB3. While Suzuki has won a total of six Paralympic medals, he had not won a medal at the Paralympic Games since London 2012.

Suzuki bettered his qualifying time from the morning session by almost six seconds. He clinched gold after Italy's Luigi Beggiato appearing to fade in the final 10m stretch. RPC's Roman Zhdanov took home bronze.

The Paralympic record in this event - men's 100m freestyle S4 - was set at Athens 2004 by Hanada Yuji, a seven-time Paralympic medallist.

Suzuki's gold comes less than 24 hours after Yamada Miyuki became Japan's first medallist of Tokyo 2020 with a silver in the women's 100m backstroke S2.

Francesco Bocciardo wins his second gold at the Games

Way to start Day 2 of the swimming finals. Italy's Francesco Bocciardo storms to gold in the men's 100m freestyle - S5 and touched the wall at 1:09.56 seconds ahead of People's Republic of China's Wang Lichao and top favourite Daniel Dias of Brazil.

This is Bocciardo's second gold at the Games and he still has three more events coming up in the next few days.

Great Britain's van Gass adds gold to team's medal haul in Cycling Track

Jaco van Gass cruises to victory over Great Britain compatriot Finlay Graham to win men's cycling C3 3000m individual pursuit to add to the three silvers won by the team on day two in the Izu Velodrome at Tokyo 2020.

The 35-year-old had already set a world and Paralympic record in qualifying in 3:17.593, before he crossed the line ahead of his 21-year-old compatriot Finlay Graham in the final in 3:20.987.

Australia’s David Nicholas claimed the bronze in the race after beating Spain's Eduardo Santas Asensio.

Spain's Alfonso Cabello has broken his own world record, originally set in April 2014, to win gold in the men's C4-5 1000m time trial event with a time of 1:01.557 at Izu Velodrome.

The 27-year-old already has two Paralympic medals in the event - gold from London 2012 and bronze from Rio 2016.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Mikahail Astashov from the Russian Paralympic Committee who broke the world and Paralympic record in the men’s C1 3000m individual pursuit in 3:35.954. It was a sensational Paralympic debut for the 32-year-old who beat Canada's Tristen Chernove into silver and China’s Liang Guihua took home the bronze.

There were more records broken in the men’s C2 3000m individual pursuit when France’s Alexandre Leaute, 20,crossed the line in 3:31.817 to break the world and Paralympic record. The four-time world champion, who was making his Paralympic debut, beat an impressive field, which included world champion Darren Hicks from Australia who came second and Rio 2016 champion China’s Liang Guihua into bronze.

Guo Lingling beats her own world record

China's Guo Lingling has won gold in the women's -41kg with a world record lift of 108kg before going on to break it with 109kg during a powerlift.

Indonesia's Ni Nengah Widiasih won her nation their first medal of the Tokyo 2020 Games taking silver (98kg). with Venezuela's Clara Sarahy Fuentes Monasterio taking bronze (97kg), who made her Paralympic debut.

Paralympic Refugee Teams first appearance

Ibrahim Al Hussein has become the first member of the Paralympic Refugee Team to make their appearance at Tokyo 2020. After representing the Independent Paralympic Team, the Syrian-born swimmer is now one of six athletes representing the Refugee Paralympic Team.

Unfortunately, he was DSQ in his 100m breaststroke SB8 heat but he will be back later this week for the 50m freestyle S9 event.
